Title basically. Originally was going to use 'I', but it's way too far from WASD, and feels uncomfortable.
I was thinking TAB would be nice, but a friend of mine suggests G, so I thought I'd take some sort of poll. What do you think would work well?
The inventory is basically a generic-RPG, weighted-system, by the way. |

| Any key at all that makes sense. Most RPG games use: E, Q, G, I, J, Z, X, C, B, M |

On second thought, this should've gone in game-design... Crap.

Thanks for your input. I really want to have a setup where the controls feel intuitive and easy to understand. Tab and Q feel pretty natural.

You need to consider a few things
How is the inventory accessed? What is the inventory for? When is the inventory accessed? Can the inventory be grouped into the context of other menus (See Borderlands, Terraria, etc)?
In RPGs for example, you have to consider whether the inventory also includes the player equip and therefore its primary function. In more traditional games you might find it under I for inventory, however this assumes that the player will not be touching their inventory manually very often and uses it solely for storage.
Does your inventory contain an equip context? [E] for equipment will satisfy most players, and in a given context it is quite easy to reach (For games where you need your inventory a lot, this is good).
Is your inventory literally mostly used for storage and used primarily by other prompts such as shops, chests, or something else? [I].
Don't need it often (As in Global Offensive for example)? I'd recommend hiding it away somewhere and letting it be used solely in context, but [I] will suffice.
Can it be grouped into other things? [TAB] is a good bet for that, as is [E], however for tabbed menus like that you'll want a dedicated button for opening the menu (Last tab) and dedicated buttons for each tab. |

How is the inventory accessed? A button press, sometimes automatically when interacting with NPCs.
What is the inventory for? Equipment, storage, trading, etc.
When is the inventory accessed? Going to assume you mean when WILL the player use it. Likeky before and after fights to check gear and assess wins, also when trading to check money and negotiate deals over rare items.
Can the inventory be grouped into the context of other menus (See Borderlands, Terraria, etc)? Yea, I take a lot of inspiration from Terraria's UI. You'll be able to access menus from other places as well, though. |

I like G, especially if most nearby keys are used for game play. Chances are, you won't need to open your inventory in the middle of combat, but all of the other combative and useful keys should be Q, E, R, F, Shift, Control, Tab, and maybe a couple of others.
