After the bombs fell in 1971, many of New York's population fled to the sewers below. Of course, many textbooks and documents were lost to the nuclear fire, resulting in very little written information surviving. When a new generation came about in the sewers, they were left with no teachers or no education, only survival and fear. In the mid 80s, a man named Arthur Phillips realized that the current generation needed education and knowledge, otherwise they'd become nothing but savages, only caring about survival. Arthur had a PhD in world history before the war, and also had lots of knowledge regarding physical science and math.
Arthur would begin to leave signs in Central town, inviting anyone with any knowledge of math, science, history, creative writing, etc. To come and join him in his home in the town. Many pre war teachers and researchers came to Arthur with similar goals that he had. Arthur formed the "Old World Syndicate", a group of people with the common goal of educating the populace, and protecting them. Arthur began to organize classes on every subject from math to learning French. More and more people began to attend his classes, adults and children alike were learning.
Along with this new growth of students, Arthur realized that many had no protection against bandits and feral mutants, and than began to recruit pre war soldiers and law enforcement, or anyone who knew how to fight. Arthur, with the help of a few pre war military officers and law enforcement, created the Guard Corps, a group of trained guards to protect civilians out in the wastes.
The Syndicate is made up of four groups, Teachers, Guards, Collectors, and Researchers.
Teachers: Anyone who has good knowledge of a subject. They teach classes at town hall and also help collectors document information.
Collectors: Many people who fill this role were either pre war English teachers or authors. They write down and store the information that they get from the researchers.
Researchers: The brave souls who live out on the surface, facing harsh conditions and ferals. Researchers study everything about the surface, ranging from it's weather to where radioactive hotspots are. They are trained in combat as well, so they are able to protect themselves when guards are not around.
Guards: The fighters that protect the Syndicate and the people. They are decently armed, and have some lower tier body armor.
Here's the list of the weaponry employed by the Syndicate.
HK-33: A roller delayed blowback operated rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm. This is the main rifle employed by the guards and commonly carried by the Researchers. The Syndicate produces there own ammo for the HK33, but its not the most reliable and tends to be not as powerful. Jams do happen. (RP these)
M1911A1: A semi automatic recoil operated pistol chambered in .45 ACP. This is the sidearm used by all members of the syndicate, but many use there own pistols as sidearms.
Petrol bomb: This is a homemade anti personnel grenade used by the guards against enemies. It uses shrapnel usually made out of nails or lead balls, and a blackpowder fuse.
Guards have level II kevlar vests, that can stop anything under .44 magnum and also buckshot. Guards also sometimes have old M1 helmets.
(This faction will mostly be used for ATF darkness, but we can also RP on other ATF games, with the only difference being that Arthur started this in the major scraptown of each game, like docktown for ATF 3 and southside for ATF 6.)
