Just last year, we lost about 45% of honeybee colonies. The mortality rate for bees is high, and it's only getting higher.
I'm DapperNarwhal, if that means anything. |

"there are other insects who can pollinate."
You do realize that bees alone pollinate about 70% of the crop species we eat in some way or another, right? That feeds about 90% of the world. Honey bees are a part of a $30,000,000,000 industry. While some other insects do pollinate, bees do so more than any other insect, and the entire ecosystem would be thrown off if they were to completely die off. We could still survive, but nearly HALF of our crops would start to die off.
And even then, it isn't just bees that are dying off; it's just about every pollinating insect. Bees are just the front-man of pollination, and are often used as major examples in movements that bring awareness to the loss of pollinating insects. Many of the factors that are causing bees to die are ALSO causing the death of other pollinating insects, such as lepidoptera, coleoptera, hymenoptera (which are mainly bees, but ants are also a part of this group), and even diptera.
As I said, we could still survive without pollinating species. Many grains (such as corn) do not use arthropodic vectors as a means of pollination, and rely on wind. Many other species would die off too though, unless they could adjust their diets very quickly. Prices of fruits and vegetables would skyrocket, and many arthropodic vector-pollinated plants would die off.
I'm DapperNarwhal, if that means anything. |
