I'm sorry about the alliteration in the title.
But yes, we can change the color of terrain water to whatever we want, I'd find it very useful to be able to change the color of each individual terrain texture apart from water.
Theoretically this shouldn't be too hard to implement, it's just a matter of actually DOING it. Just have an extra tab in the terrain properties window with each terrain texture listed with an override color beside. It should be possible to just use some blend mode to apply the color to the texture and store the result locally (per Gameplace). Perhaps the override could be applied per cell so you could have multiple different colors of the same texture.
Some of the terrain textures have multiple colors in them as well, which might not work so well with a simple blend mode, and in response to that, perhaps instead of a color wheel, you let gamedevs use a hue slider and just shift the tint of the texture (eg. shifting lava to the right would result in the glowing veins shifting red->orange->yellow->green->etc). Alternatively if programming the UI and functionality for that turns out to be a pain, you could just have a Use Color Override checkbox that converts the texture to black and white before applying the color overlay. This preserves the original textures (they won't need to change) while still letting us have bright magenta grass.
I'm not sure why this isn't implemented yet; it feels like terrain has been being mostly ignored lately. Being able to change the color of terrain textures would invite more variation in worlds created using terrain. Art worlds, alien worlds, surreal worlds, post apocalyptic worlds, and etc, are not possible using the terrain tools as they are now, at least not to any quality extent.
You can use a strong ambient color to cheat in the atmosphere you're looking for without modifying the terrain texture colors, but that's where things start to get limited and it stops being intuitive.
I know these suggestions are rarely implemented, but it's still worth a try. |

Did I say tinted water? No, I said tinted terrain. Work on your reading comprehension, buddy. |
