yo okay so emojis are cool you can blame japan and apple for them and i'm really into it as a linguist
so this one japanese cellular service was all like "so i mean we text with symbols which we send as data as basically pictures anyway, why not use actual pictures?" "eh sure why not" so they made emojis then other cell services made their own
THEN CAME THE UNICODE COMPENDIUM (they standardize how we use letters and symbols between computers and internet and stuff) so they were like "okay so here's the english letters" "alright russia, you have some new letters lets use those too" "cool japan, you have completely different symbols, we'll put those in here and-" "japan what are those" japan:"oh they're emojis we use them to talk" "but wha-" japan:"we use them to talk put them in your unicode thing" "bu-" japan:"WE USE THEM TO TALK" "alright ok so we'll put those in too"
and apple put an emoji keyboard in their japanese phones so they could still use emojis then eventually apple was like "hey why not enable the keyboard for everyone? can't hurt right?" then somebody noticed and it all went to 💩 from then on |
