If I put a sound in a part (say a character's torso), would the sound come from that part?

Yes. If you want the sound to be localized (for only one player to hear it) put the sound in the player and set the max distance to 0. Otherwise the sound will be loud enough for others

Set the MaxDistance to any variable you want, whether you want it to be heard by all players, set it to max, or if you just want it to be heard in one area, set it down a bit. Roblox uses the Doppler Effect, meaning, yes, they get louder the closer you are, and quieter the farther you are away.

Yes I have that bit...but I want other players to be able to hear the music if they get close to the player playing the music

They'll hear it as they get closer. I don't think MaxDistance is enabled yet.

I tested it with my phone and as i walked closer on my phone i couldn't hear the sound

At the moment the sound is only client sided...only the player with the sound inside them can hear it
