I take L-theanine. It's not really an antidepressant, but it can help relax you, which can sorta make you happier.

"Pills and medicines are scary"
L-theanine is OTC, you'd be fine. It's heavily based off of the two amino acids L-glutamate and L-glutamine, which are typically located in certain plants and fungi. They usually take it from gyokuro leaves, as they contain lots of theanine. It's completely herbal. Most L-theanine capsules don't have anything synthetic in them, aside from the capsule itself.

| I use passionflower extract. Its cheap, and its all natural. You put some of it in a bottle of water or something, and drink it. It tastes like flowers tho. |

"It sounds expensive."
You can get 30 200 mg capsules for $5. I take it for my chronic insomnia, and I have to get more every couple months. The ones I get are expensive (because they have more than just L-theanine), but you can get a bunch for a very small amount of money.

It's not really a sleep aid on its own, but it's GREAT if you take it with melatonin and B-6. I take 200 mgs of theanine, about 10 mgs of melatonin, and a couple mgs of B-6. B-12 can help with sleep too, but a lot of melatonin tabs have B-6 in them.

"I don't know if I'm convinced"
Take this from a chronic insomniac who DEPENDS on theanine to get any good amount of sleep; I've recently started taking it again after a long hiatus, and it has no serious side-effects if you use it properly. It doesn't even really have any interactions with other medications. And as I said, it's over-the-counter, so you won't have to get a prescription or anything.
