| It's kind of annoying honestly. Like I was OFFICIALLY diagnosed by a a professional DOCTOR as depressed but you don't see me bragging about it in every thread, I've never told OT about my depression besides a few OTers I know |

it's 2 things imo 1. desiring attention 2. the fact that depression is one of the easiest disorders to claim to have |

It may be their only source of outlet to vent to others, for some probably can't helped due to personal reasons. I used to feel depressed, but I never told anyone about it since I didn't want anyone to feel disheartened, as if it was their own fault. |

| People often mistake depression for simply "feeling sad". Those people might legitimately feel that they are depressed and are trying to reach out to people, but true depression usually goes unnoticed. |

Attention. I doubt they are depressed. [2]
Then again, attention does help, but I'm not sure if it has effect on people with actual depressive disorders though but I don't have experience with them. I don't blame people for getting attention personally as long as they don't overdo it. I try to empathize really since sometimes I'm an attention seeker or maybe I think I am because I'm scared I'll come across as one. I don't see why people get so mad at them but hey this is OT after all. Sure, this isn't a good place to attention seek, but there's not many places you can do it.
If they overdo it it's understandable to find it annoying but even then personally I don't care. Complain about all of your problems to me if you want I won't get mad really. It's better than most topics on here anyways honestly because a lot of threads here are boring. At least it's something to gain post count on. |

I agree with this.
I don't feel sadness but I feel constant apathy which to me is at least twice as bad. It bothers me when people say "OMG IM DEPRESSED SOMETHING SOCIALLY HAPPENED TO ME," and while it can be saddening for a week or two, depression is chronic I think. It's almost like I want something bad to happen, or at least something to happen, even though I'm scared to say that because what if something really bad happens.
If people really do want attention though maybe they have another problem, perhaps even a disorder if they constantly need attention, especially if they're willing to try to get it on OT.
What's the point of even getting attention anyways? Most people are all the same and I could care less. The only thing I don't want is constantly being flamed everywhere but I don't care if I'm liked or hated as long as it's in moderation. |

My mother suffered from horrible chronic depression; she was a pretty terrible mother in my early life because of it. Neglected to take care of me both emotionally and physically, all because she shut herself in her room. She wasn't necessarily malicious in her neglect, she just couldn't bring herself to get out of that room. Even when they put her on her meds, it was still horrible; in fact, it made her worse. She was never vocal about it either.
My mother has improved since then though. Definitely the best mother I could ask for.
But that's what really ticks me off about people who blab to everyone about their """chronic depression""". Yes, you might be sad. That's fine. But if you have severe depression like that, it ain't something you usually tell everyone about. Telling a select few individuals is entirely reasonable. No one expects you to deal with it all on your own; that's just impossible. But if you're truly in the deepest form of depression, you aren't likely to do much talking at all.

Cries for attention.
Attention matters a lot if you're feeling down.

| Going off of what Dapper said, the other poopy thing is that it can be really detrimental to people who are actually depressed to see people misrepresent the label of "chronic depression". I had a major depressive disorder that caused me to drop out of school and complete in online in my final year. It was really tough looking to the people who had bragged about being depressed as much as me, hoping to find some camaraderie, and finding that they had achieved more than I could ever feasibly imagine. |

| Well since I mention my apathy to OT frequently I probably don't have anything like depression. Maybe constant boredom syndrome if that even exists lol. |

lmao well you might have depression, at the end of the day it depends how much it affects you personally. If you're bored developing some hobbies might help tho. I like to complete puzzles and play instruments. |

Constant or frequent boredom is definitely a symptom of depression (depending on who the person is), but it isn't depression. I, for one, am always bored. But over the 5-year span I went to therapy, and the several psychiatric assessments I did, I was never diagnosed with depression of any sort. Though this was over a decade though, and I wasn't really likely to have anything like that around that time anyway.

"I hate going to therapy"
I feel you man I've never been able to complete a round of therapy. I like self-help books better personally. |
