some people scream "STOP SELF DIAGNOSING YOU JERK" instead of helping someone when they talk about their depression
its like they'd rather have someone die than have someone not be professionally diagnosed |

I'd never do it, but it's more accurate than some people think; it should never serve as a definite though. Only a general assumption. Professional diagnosis should always be sought after if you think you have some form of disorder, but self-diagnosis shouldn't be as shamed as it is.

i'm neutral on this, but I knew some people who thought they had something, and when the doctor said something otherwise, they got mad and started telling a TRAINED person that they're "wrong"
i think it's alright, but it's not going to be 100% correct |

I agree it's kind of rude when used like that, but it can be non-beneficial to people who suffer from real clinical depression because it causes people to misunderstand and misrepresent clinical depression as "being sad".
It's kind of like what stupid genders like mayonnaisegender or whatever do to the transgender community. It's just delegitimatizing.
Plus doctors are there for a reason. If someone convinces themselves they are affected by a specific mental illness it can actually amplify their symptoms. |

Trained doesn't always mean right though. I've proven some of my doctors wrong on a few different occasions. They'd tell me I had one thing, even though I KNEW I had another. Go to another doctor to get a second opinion, and it turns out I was right. It's always good to a get a second opinion if you have doubts about a diagnosis.

Well, the root of it is more or less that people 'lie' about it. I put those tiny marks around "lie" because often times when they self diagnose it's not even what they diagnosed on themselves and it's not intentional that they mislead people through their conclusion. Fact of the matter is; symptoms aren't solely dedicated to one thing and a plain Joe doesn't really have reliable intellect over the matter (as in years of medical training). And when you diagnose yourself it's not going to be as near good as a Doctor's insight. Heck. A stranger could diagnose another person better than the person because of clouded personal interest. A person with a cold can assume quickly they have the flu just because they have a runny nose. I'm saying that through experience on people at school.
In short though it's just annoying. That's no reason to go harassing the person though.

| Additionally it's kind of old-fashioned to jump to a diagnosis in the psychiatric community. Most doctors, as opposed to the treatment of depression, will prefer to treat you for your "depressive-symptoms" in order to create a more comprehensive and individualistic treatment plan. However some people become upset when they aren't given a clear label, which is understandable based on a basic understanding of psychiatry. |
