In the USN there are many types of ships, and each type generally has more than one commissioned vessel within the category or class.
The main types of ships are; Destroyers, Cruisers, Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), Aircraft Carriers, Amphibious Assault Ships, Attack Submarines, and Guided Missile Submarines.
✯DESTROYERS✯ --DDG Operating in battle groups, destroyers escort aircraft carriers and other important types of ships, as well as perform strike missions. They are equipped with missiles, guns, and other arms. Destroyers are primarily known for their speed and agility.
Destroyer Classes: Arleigh Burke-Class Zumwalt-Class
✯CRUISERS✯ -CG Cruisers are similar to destroyers in being escorts, and missile carrying, however cruisers are more heavily armed than destroyers and have long range missile systems, guns, anti-submarine equipment, etc. Cruisers are essentially a more hefty version of the destroyer at the cost of speed and agility.
Cruiser Classes: Ticonderoga-Class In the USN there are many types of ships, and each type generally has more than one commissioned vessel within the category or class.
✯LITTORAL COMBAT SHIPS✯ --LCS LCS are relatively small combat vessels based in the littoral (or shore) areas that are fast and stealthy. They are also classified as 'Corvettes' and are equiped with a flight deck, usually a hangar and are decently armed.
LCS Classes: Freedom-Class Independence-Class
✯Aircraft Carriers✯ --CVN Aircraft carriers are the strongest ships in the U.S. Navy, they carry more firepower in their aircraft than a fleet of battleships. Aircraft carriers are very strong in offensive power, however they require escorts for safety. Aircraft carriers are also the largest vessels in the world.
Aircraft Carrier Classes: Ford-Class Nimitz-Class Midway-Class
✯Amphibious Assault Ships✯ Amphibious Assault Ships (or Amphibious Assault Carriers) carry amphibious vehicles to the enemy lines and are essentially small carriers. The sub-classes of this type of ship is extensive.
Amphibious Assault Ship Classes: Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH) Landing Helicopter Assault (LHA) Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Amphibious Transport Dock (LPD) Dock Landing Ship (LSD)
✯Attack Submarines✯ --SSN Attack submarines are given the task of hunting down and sinking other submarines, surface combatants, and merchant vessels. Attack submarines are fast, stelthy and lethal weapons. They can also launch fairly deadly missiles from underwater or surfaced depths.
Attack Submarine Classes: Los Angeles-Class Seawolf-Class Virginia-Class
✯Missile Submarines✯ [Not accurate] --SSGN Missile Submarines are capable of launching nuclear warheads at any targets, even from underwater.
Missile Submarine Classes: Ohio-Class
Those are the most important types and classes of ships in the U.S. Navy, most of which WILL be available in this group, though as for the large content in text, there may not be equal content on the virtual field, as it were. |
