| how did we know what each letter would look and sound like, and how would we have been able to document it before if we didn't know how to write it down. |

We made sounds and created symbols to represent the sounds.

Sounds to describe objects, then symbols to identify objects and to symbolise and represent/serve as a placeholder as the sounds, which eventually evolved into what we have now.
Stars above, engender my way! |

it started with sounds, no writing systems and it started out very basic, with very simple terms, maybe like numbers up to 10 (what you can count with your fingers), nouns for things like rocks, sticks, fire, etc, and simple emotions like happy, sad |

OH BOY THIS IS LITERALLY MY MAJOR IN UNIVERSITY
WELLLLLL (in a nutshell):
spoken language started first when humans were developing, even before civilization cave paintings and the like were kinda precursors to written language: they convey information visually
eventually humans had spoken languages, and they were passed down through generations (like how your parents teach you how to speak, the same way, presumably)
then humans were all like "yo, we need a way to record things" so they invented cuneiform, one of the first written languages it's pretty much just connected lines, but this enabled... wait for it... TRADE!!!! orders could be placed without the need for memorization, stock could be kept also: stories!!! kings were written about, battles, etc...
it was developed basically by making up which symbol corresponded to which syllable in the spoken language (sometimes one symbol is one word!)
once the people decided on the conventions, they taught others!
basically from then on, languages were created this way usually languages are evolved forms of other languages
writing styles vary too: they can have symbols depicting words, syllables, or individual sounds that are put together to form syllables or words (this is like english: an alphabet)
writing styles also evolved from others, and some were made up completely the korean writing style was created from scratch by their emperor (fun fact)
i could go on and on but there's a character limit |
