Actually, that is not the case. In fact, it is theorized that us humans might be the smartest species in existence.

| judging by how long the universe has been around there are a bunch of time periods already happening for different civilizations. one could be far into the future and one could be just starting to develop organisms. |

@Ace Because theoretically aliens should be everywhere, yet we have failed to find them, which could mean we're the only ones high-tech enough to even go into space.

| because it's something we havent seen, something we can only imagine. wouldn't be boring if we all thought that they only had bikes? we all have seen bikes, we know how they work. so that's why people imagine something out of this world of invention (literally) and pin it onto another place/being. |

Possibly because of human curiosity.
Humans want to learn answers and by learning answers those answers open more questions. Its a infinite loop.

If you believe in the millions of documented UFO sightings, one could infer that there are a lot of species out there smarter than us
Not many of our planets have the right conditions for life which would mean that they came from other galaxies, which is a capability we don't have currently have
We've only set a human foot on our moon, but even then, there are conspiracy theories out there (not to say that they're true but...)
TL;DR - They really are more advanced |

Well, I think we can almost section off civilisations into two catagories: those that survived THEMSEVLES, and those that didn't. Humanity is on the brink, the edge, the endgame, whatever you would want to call it. That is, as I believe can already be guessed, nuclear warfare. I'm certain that with any species there will ALWAYS be infighting, other intelligent life no less, so we can safely assume that at some point they will, or have, built up their weaponry to an extent comparable to that of humanity's. From here, as I mentioned and as we can note from our very own histories, tensions will rise to even greater levels with these weapons and each group will know that with one use, all will use it, and the whole species will get wiped out. This, I believe, is where most all alien//intelligent civilisations have ended. They killed themselves, the poor fools. Like I said, there is a transition zone of course, that being where humanity is, and, of course, that is the most dangerous part. Tensions are the highest. Weapons still set for activation if needbe. Only difference from the past is that more people now have access, so now people people, more players into the game of relations. Once past this, once these WMDs are set aside once and for all, can I truly say that the advanacement and "jump" into the second, and final, sector can be announced. This, I believe, is a place where very few, hell, if any civilisations have been able to make it. From here, I suppose we can assume there is competition via consumerism, allowing for increase and innovation, yet not hostility, no need to fear for one's own extinction. From here, we can assume that the entirety of the civilisation advance to levels completely incomparable to humanity's at its state, despite potentially only being a few mere centuries away from its current time in development. Like I said, going back to the past, the "transitional" and "danger" phase is likely very short - a century or slightly more/less (in case they go whoopsies and kill themselves). As we can, again, note form out own history, development in the last century+some is entirely incomparable to humanity's past, the time it had taken to advance such little. If we were to base it off of this, that being our scale for alien intelligent life, we can assume, as I just stated, they grew like us, have similar phases, etc. Because of this, that would mean that all aliens are either: Just as intelligent as us, far smarter than us, or incomparably stupider than us.

Nice counter-argument
". Because of this, that would mean that all aliens are either: Just as intelligent as us, far smarter than us, or incomparably stupider than us."
You covered all options there, while it was an interesting read it didn't narrow down the choice of how intelligent foreign life forms could be at all ...

The point about it was to describe how alien life forms will be, what intelligence they will hold, at what point in their development. As I stated, most civilisations will be wiped out by their own powers, inventions, very few likely to move forward, which can be implied to say that most that are still alive will likely be in a primitive, dumb form.
aka, dumber than us for the most part
However, as I said again, those that survive will be far smarter, far more advanced. So, if one were to visit us here on Earth, we can assume they would be far smarter than us.
It's really about stages of development that I described and how intelligent they will be for each. Like I said earlier this post, since most will likely be primitive, most are likely far dumber than us.
