And now he is earning no money.
Leffen has put too much hard work into Melee to be barred from the United States because "eSports" does not qualify as an athlete for a P1 Visa.
If you were really concerned with players having the wrong Visa and not paying taxes for their winnings, you would sign this to officialize and legitimize eSports for international players to be able to file for a P1 Visa and not have to file for a "tourist" visa. |

eSports isn't athletics and it's not a sport. Is it a competition? Yes. Should it be recognized as a legitimate means to come to another country? Only if that country is supporting a large enough consumer base for that competition.
Is it a sport? No.
Don't call it a damn sport. That's offensive to people who actually put in blood sweat and tears into their athletics, a hell of a lot more effort than "eSport" players put in to be good at video games.
Damn, people are ignorant.
But what do I know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

@Weap
Because there's so much more to it than just beating the crap out of eachother.
And to another point, I don't think chess is a sport and I don't think poker should be on a sports network. Because they aren't sports, they're card games and board games.
The definition of sport is "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."
That means that "eSports", card games, board games, so on so forth, really aren't sports. And honestly it's offensive not just to the very few who are making millions but to the millions of people who grind in genuine effort into their game, not just "effort" like "oh I'll try hard to beat this scrub on RCL", but effort like "I will do this many sprints, every day. I will work on this lift on these days, and this lift on other days." To be good at a sport you have to have a physical gift, athletic talent and rapid thinking skills, but you also have to give 100% to what you do, every single day. It's a full body, full mind commitment.
But what do I know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

@King
Because of this eSport and Sport have different definitions. eSports has a similar definition, but without the physical exertion aspect of it.
eSport: "A multiplayer video game played competitively for spectators, typically by professional gamers"
Basically you're against this because of the mindset you have on games just being entertaining toys for children.
While this is still true, games have evolved in this day and age to something that is meant to be played by both children and adults whether on a competitive or non-competitive level. Because these are games does not mean that you do not need gifts, talent, or rapid thinking skills to compete professionally. Professional eSport players put great dedication into what they do, just as professional sport players do.

I'm not saying that eSport players don't put dedication into what they do but if you think that it's even close, even >>remotely<< close to the dedication and effort that professional, collegiate, or even many high school athletes put into their sports then you have no idea what you're talking about.
