Since plants only need air and water, if they always had that would they live forever?

no. plants need so much more than water and air. they need specific temperature cycles and an optimal amount of water. they need nutrients and specific types of soil to thrive. some even need other organisms to survive, such as certain fungi and lichens
even if they were raised in a "perfect" environment, plants would still senesce and die. they have a lifespan just like any other living organism, albeit longer than what we're used to with animals |

| i'm not quite sure, but i'd be surprised if 8 plants could replace oxygen in the air quickly enough for you to continue surviving in a closed system |

I found this on the web about snake plants: "nake Plant a.k.a. Mother-In-Law’s Tongue: Of all the different oxygen producing plants, this one is unique since it converts a lot of CO2 (carbon dioxide) to O2 (oxygen) at night, making it ideal to have several in your bedroom. 6-8 waist high plants are needed per person to survive if there is no air flow (meaning you could live in a completely air sealed room if you had these plants and the Areca Palms present). The snake plant also removes formaldehyde from the air."

| it depends on the species of plant. eHow says that snake plants can live up to 25 years, but i don't know if i trust eHow all that much |
