| Knowing math and reading isn't all to being smart. There are things called, morals, logic, and emotional intelligence. Most people have none of those three. |

Knowledge ≠ Smart
Also the reason why the modern generation seems to be so stupid is because it mostly consists of young people between the ages of 18-25.

"morals, logic, and emotional intelligence" morals does the average person do bad stuff without any dismay? really? is this even a valid argument? emotional intelligence? i dont understand what this has to do with anything. see, if someone is uncomfortable or upset or happy, i don't know why someone wouldn't be able to recognize that..? as for logic, i still don't know what you mean by most people have none of that, i feel as if people have decent problem solving skills

Because everyone was racist when they were younger.
Also, me saying people aren't smart is not being racist. |

"Because everyone was racist when they were younger"
Ok honestly judging your upbringing right now. I work with kids a lot and I've never met a racist among them, but it seems like old people are really quick to judge me for my race. I'm just saying, if the older generation has so much "emotional intelligence and logic", then why are they often the most resistant to change? |

"is there some sort of golden age where people were smart?"
No. But there was a time when humans didn't spend most of their time in front of a monitor, a time when the average Joe was productive.
"were people better at math in the olden days"
Generally speaking, probably not. Back in the olden days they came up with theorems that we use today. Our generation leeches off of what the generations before ours discovered. We've had the world mapped out for us already.
"were people better at reading in the olden days"
No. But that's mainly due to poverty and the class systems that existed back then.
"did people know a fraction of the things we know now"
Most of the things we know now were discovered by people who came generations before us. |

@h3lecopter
Most people don't have morals today. Look at successful people. Most don't have morals. Emotional intelligence has to do with how smart you are with your emotions. Todays younger population is not smart with their emotions. Logic is a lot more than problem solving skills. You had a lack of logic in your original post, saying that because we have gotten better at reading and math, we must be smarter. That is a part to whole and is considered illogical fallacious reasoning. |

| Every generation is going to be smarter than the last. That is because we constantly build off of the technology invented in the previous generation. Did people older than us invent the internet? Sure! But now we can use this wealth of knowledge to get further than they ever would- especially because we've been using it at a young age. This is simply the natural progression of society, and I'm not sure why people often choose to cherrypick their favorite parts of the past. |

"That is a part to whole and is considered illogical fallacious reasoning." i was giving an example on how people have improved on certain aspects that they weren't able to do now and i have given other examples in which people have gotten more knowledge and understanding on people and how things work and people's overall abilities. see, a lot of people probably were smart years ago, but there are more people who have knowledge on certain aspects of things and people are moving forward in which people probably aren't becoming dumber, which is my main argument.

@spyblox
How can you say that people don't have morals compared to the past? Are you trying to say that there weren't immoral successful people in the past? What about the factory owners during the Industrial Revolution? Or World Wars I and II??
It sounds to me like you're simply employing the "fallacy fallacy", the idea that just because a point contains a logical fallacy it is invalid. |

| I think I see what is going on here. Two groups of people are confusing the term "smart". OP is using it to describe the knowlage of people. Me and a few other guys are using it to describe wisdom. The real question is, is it better to have knowlage, or wisdom? |
