Hey, I'm curious as to when people think that use of free models is acceptable?
Generally when the term free models is used, it has negative connotations. But is there an acceptable use that would improve the game? For example, using some rocks from free models to improve the general look of the game, but still making almost everything yourself.
Or is there completely no acceptable use of free models and game devs should make everything themselves from scratch?
I'm genuinely wondering what people think about this. Please keep the discussion civilised! Thanks :) |

| I consider free models as a "starter kit" for developers who are starting out |

you can use them, but limit it
if you need crates? then use some crates
need some barrels? then use some barrels
maybe use a stationed car? go for it
just don't go crazy and throw too many in |

As long as you don't become JuliusCole and claim having created everything it's ok but badly seen by people, depending on if you made good content or not.
My brother made a free modeled train war game and nobody's complaining so much since it's supposedly "good" and "classic-looking".

| I mean, you don't have to build every model yourself. |

| I'll give it a pass if you keep a credits list somewhere on who made the free models you used. |

| I think it's acceptable if the owner doesn't claim that they made the free model. It isn't acceptable if the game is full of free models. |

| Use free models whenever you want as long as you make sure your game doesn't get popular. All popular games should be made completely by you. |

I only find free models okay if they are super simple, and can be easily re-created. Like the crates, I can easily build that, but why waste the time when it's right there in the free model list. If I build a crate it's gonna look just like the free model anyways.

It's acceptable if you wanna use them for small things, like a trash can, some lamposts, house doors, etc.
But make everything else yourself, and then stop using free models and make the stuff yourself.

It really does depend on you.
If someone notices something that comes from free models, they might have a negative impression of your game, thinking that you took a lazy shortcut. However, you can save lots of time with this and cut away a large part of the place building process. |

| I am just going to say this once. If you are going to make a game with free models, make sure you COMPLETELY EDIT the free model, for example change a ton of scripts, change some of the designs. Just like what "O_o" did with his games. (Some of them) |

It is acceptable if you make the game look like it does not have free models.
