Air Mobility Command Tryout Manual
This is purposed as a reference guide for Air Mobility Command tryouts. As we prefer our instructor staff to be former MTI's or currently MTI's, as it helps to have them already know about basic training, which is much alike a tryout.
As there are a few different forces within AMC, the 18th, 21st, and 15th, there are different roles. When hosting a tryout, you MUST clearly state the force that they will be trying out for, and give a short description on that force.
Fifteenth Expeditionary Mobility Task Force (15 EMTF)
15 EMTF provided strategic and theater airlift for all United States Department of Defense agencies as well as air refueling for the Air Force in both peace and wartime. Primary aircraft assigned to its units were the C-5 Galaxy, C-9 Nightingale, C-17 Globemaster III, C-21, C-130 Hercules, KC-10 Extender, and KC-135 Stratotanker.
Eighteenth Air Force (18 AF)
As AMC’s sole NAF (and the Air Force’s largest NAF), 18 AF is responsible for the command's worldwide operational mission of providing rapid, global mobility and sustainment for America's armed forces through airlift, aerial refueling, aeromedical evacuation, and a global air mobility support system. 18 AF presents air mobility forces to combatant commanders through its role as Air Forces Transportation (AFTRANS), the air component of United States Transportation Command. The 18 AF commander also acts as the Commander, Air Force Forces (COMAFFOR), and Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC), when so designated.
21st Expeditionary Mobility Task Force
21 EMTF's strategic airlift force included the C-5 Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster III and the C-130 Hercules, aircraft, used to move cargo and passengers worldwide. The tanker force included KC-10 Extenders and KC-135 Stratotankers used for in flight refueling to provide increased global mobility. In addition to the Task Force's airlift and refueling mission, the 89th Airlift Wing at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland provided worldwide administrative airlift support to the President of the United States and other top government officials flying the C-20, C-21, C-32, VC-25 (Air Force One), VC-137, and UH-1 aircraft.
I do not expect you, or anyone else will expect you, to know all of that. But please go over the material with yourself. Please know what you are talking about when you host a training for that air force, and you are always welcome to research more information about those air forces.
Onto the subject of the tryout itself. Each tryout is composed of four parts, much alike a basic training. These parts are in order as follows:
-Faces
-Ground school
-Flight
-Graduation
Faces:
Announce the tryout about an hour before it starts, so people know that there will be one. Arrive at the base it is being held at 10-15 minutes before you put up the actual shout for the tryout itself.
When people start to show up, tell them to get their ABU's on, and stand STS in the place you are meeting. When you have around 3-5 people attending, start to go over faces with them. Have them practice their faces until 6-7 people have shown up. Continue with a short face test, and proceed to the next step.
Ground school:
This is a key part of training, as they are either learning to fly for the first time, or just getting a refreshment on the subject.
Lead them to a classroom, a hangar, or just keep it in the same place as the faces drill. Go over the basic parts of flight, such as ATC (air traffic control), MAXCOM, and UNICOM.
ATC- "If you are too low a rank to fly, or you feel like staying at the FOB for today, yet you still want to be in the action, ATC is what you wanna be doing. Air Traffic Control, or ATC is the on-ground role of the communicator to the pilot during MAXCOM. In ATC you check to make sure the runway in clear, and give permission to pilots to do certain things, such as taxi on the runway, take off, or land."
MAXCOM-"MAXCOM is used in larger airports, such as Andrew's or any warzone. MAXCOM is used alongside ATC, and is the pilot's end of the communication. It is the pilot asking permission from ATC to take off, taxi, or land."
UNICOM-" the prefix 'uni' means 'one.' As it goes for UNICOM, it is all the pilot self announcing everything he does. This can also be announced by a co pilot, or a radio control officer on the plane."
There are just a few more things about ground school. Go over the basic taxi plot.
"right off the runway, you have you upwind, depart from that, or take a crosswind. Depart at 45 degrees from your crosswind. When landing, line up with your downwind, and enter at 45 degrees. Slow you velocity as you take your downwind, and get ready for a final approach. Lind up with the runway threshold, and land you plane. Taxi it out to the hangars and your home free"
Once you have finished telling the students this, move onto to base hangar, and start have them each get a plane.
Flight:
When choosing a plane to have the candidates fly in, make sure you have the right plane for the right force.
15 ETMF- C-17 Globemaster III
18 AF- Any type of rotary
21 ETMF- C-130
this is where the training gets split up.
15 ETMF tryout-
Have you pilots take off in the c-17, land on the other end of the map, and then come back. Do this a few times, and when they finish, have them circle the perimeter of the base for 5-10 minutes.
18 AF-
Have half of your pilots go to the other end of the map. Tell the remaining pilots find transport the other pilots from their position to the training facility. Rep eat with the other group, just switch the roles.
21 ETMF-
Have only one plane for this. Have one of your pilots transport every candidate around the base in circles until you tell them to stop. Repeat this a couple of times. It simulates carrying a large load.

Graduation:
Once all you candidates have passed the training, tell them welcome to AMC. From there, just get the names to the CMS, CV, or CC.
If you have any other questions about this, feel free to PM me about them.
Best regards,
Calmar
