There were 251,000 reported deaths due to medical errors in 2013, which places it at third, right behind heart disease (611,000 deaths) and cancer (584,000 deaths.) Because of how deaths are reported when people are under medical care, the death is almost never listed as being a medical error. They usually report it as a death from the complication they were treating it for. The International Classification of Disease billing code applies to a lot of health conditions, but almost none of them correspond to medical errors. This means, even if it was a medical error that the patient died from, it would be reported that they died from their preexisting condition. Even if they were given the wrong medication and died from it. This makes that "251,000" inaccurate. The actual number is actually much higher than that, maybe even being higher than cancer. Heart disease and cancer get all the attention because deaths due to medical errors are rarely ever made known, so it never gets the funding it deserves. Maybe they should just hire more qualified doctors and raise the requirements for becoming one. I've seen some inept doctors.

Grey's Anatomy is pretty bad from a professional standpoint tbh. Not bad overall though.

I get that mistakes happen, but Jesus Christ... The ICD billing code NEEDS to account more for errors on the medical professional's part. Hiring more competent doctors is a good start too. They prescribe medication way too liberally, and it can quite often lead to drastic effects.

Legally? It should be, but it's not. All deaths under medical care are reported under the ICD billing code. If there isn't a code that corresponds to a given medical error, they are expected to report it as the patient dying of their preexisting affliction. The solution to the problem is really quite simple; expand the ICD billing code to accommodate medical errors so the proper people get reprimanded when things go wrong. There are some medical errors that the ICD billing code does cover, but it covers very very few.

| IMO if I was to die due to medical error I'd rather have it known that the equipment screwed up and not that I was killed by the disease. |

My great grandfather had a bad heart (and on top of that he also had an aneurysm) and he went in to go get a procedure to potentially save his life. He was doing amazing until they decided to do a second procedure, which ultimately killed him. It was reported that he died from heart failure, but it was perfectly obvious that it was a medical error. There's nothing anyone could do because technically, according to the ICD, they reported correctly.
"May I have your pre-frontal cortex?"
You have a powerful one of your own. Use your wisely.

No, it's chronic respiratory infection. #1 is 2009 memes but it's never reported.

Come to the UK. We have plenty of these deaths. Seriously... I hear children getting misdiagnosed. Like the staff think it is nothing bad and it turns out to be meningitis or something. They would also be given the wrong medication. I personally think that staff SHOULD be trained better and they stop focusing on the obese people and fix the system (No offence to the obese peeps, some are cool. I know some.) |
