The first 1-2 weeks are painful when eating
But after, you won't even know they're still in your mouth

it's science time, punks
The wire that connects all the brackets is composed of an alloy known as NiTiNOL - or Nickel Titanium Naval Ordnance Laboratory.
NiTiNOL, which is actually used in a variety of medical settings, is elastic and responds to heat. A superelastic NiTiNOL wire can be stretched by pulling it, as long as it's at the correct temperature. A NiTiNOL spring can be completely pulled straight, and then you simply heat it up and it goes back to its original shape.
When NiTiNOL is subjected to cold, it loosens, becomes elastic, and is easily shaped. When it's heated, however, NiTiNOL returns to its original shape or even shrinks a little bit.
Now, imagine that in your braces. If your wire is subjected to a hot substance, it would tighten; a cold substance would cause it to loosen. NiTiNOL doesn't contract enough that you'll notice a difference after your teeth adjust, but while the wire is still "fresh," it's very easy to notice even a slight change in the size of the wire.

the wax is for pokes - if it's poking and you feel it at the orthodontist, tell 'em so they can clip it or grind it down
