lets take birthdays, for example
"but shadow i get presents on my birthday so that means it has a point" ^ stop
dates on a calendar are a bit arbitrary when tied to an event its just the name of the month, and a number if you really think about it
why would you celebrate something that's already finished?
like weddings i understand. it's happening right in front of you. weddings are a meaningful change that should be accompanied with celebration.
a baby shower assists a child in their early years. it serves a direct purpose
but a birthday? what if you're like 10. ok so you were born exactly 10 years ago. so what? you're not a newborn anymore. this event might make you happy for like 3 days before your new toy breaks apart or gets stuffed in a drawer, never to be seen again. |

valentine's day - Celebrate love and romance
st. Patrick's day - Celebrate Irish's conversion to Christianity
father's day - Be thankful for the sacrafices your dad has made
mother's day - Be thankful for the sacrafices your mom has made
Some of these days have historical meaning, while others could be on some random date and it wouldnt matter but no one actually cares. |

the point here isn't that you're celebrating nothing after all, there are given reasons for each holiday
"Some of these days have historical meaning, while others could be on some random date and it wouldnt matter but no one actually cares." ^ that is the point. the dates are arbitrary.
a date does not have special properties in relation to events. its almost superstitious. a black cat appeared when i was born, so every time we see a black cat let's have a party.
high school graduation parties, baby showers, and weddings, all serve a real purpose in the present
"but shadow, father's day is productive because it makes fathers happy" ^ so you need a date on a calendar to show respect for your parents, or even buy them something? what, do we need a pet day to prevent animal abuse? i dont think so. |

you're trying to justify that something has no point based upon your own interpretation
just because you perceive holidays as meaningless doesn't mean that they are
using this argument you can argue that life is meaningless because the vast majority of us will live small lives that will not significantly impact the larger world
but that's entirely not the case unless you're just some depressed memester trying to garner attention |

The purpose of holidays is simple, provide an opportunity to be happy, to give a day a special meaning. A life without holidays would not be a good life.

@platinum not meaningless, pointless
they're symbolic, like letters, so yes they have meaning but meaning is not the same as utility
properties of holidays that make them pointless
1. dates are arbitrary. ex. if valentine's day happened to be in september, society would not be better or worse off than it being in february. no one would care.
2. if a holiday is dedicated to respecting a group of people, then its success is based more on herd mentality than honest respect. let's say i make up a holiday called pet day, and place this on january 5th. if you dont celebrate this holiday i made up, are you disrespecting pets everywhere? should i hold you accountable for celebrating it? "well no one knows about it"
what, my holiday doesnt count because society hasnt make it commonplace? whether we have a holiday to respect a group is entirely determinant upon popularity? why dont we have a niece day? an uncle day? do these groups not deserve celebration?
3. society would not suffer consequences without most of the holidays. we're going to be nice and exclude religious holidays, because reasons... (not allowed to talk about it on the forums)
@bladeor, in a way i do agree. if we use the meaning of holiday that simply means a break from work, then yeah people need that. all work and no play isnt a good life. do we need holidays as excuses to convince people that said breaks aren't a waste of time? i dont know. |
