I have two monitors, and it's pretty useful overall, not just for programming. A few other scenario they have benefited me personally would be researching, Cinema4D, writing papers, Photoshop, After Effects, Audition, and Premier Pro (pretty much the entire Adobe master collection). It even makes gaming easier. Set games into full-screen windowed mode and prop up Skype/Discord/Teamspeak/etc. on the other monitor - makes reading and replying extremely fast. In fact, two monitors have been so useful that I plan on getting a quad monitor setup. I have other priorities however, and at the moment the time is simply not right to take that next step. Not to mention that everything I want to do with quad monitors I can do with two monitors, same goes for two monitors, it's simply about streamlining your workflow. Before considering adding any amount of extra monitors I suggest you do some research and make sure your hardware can support the number of monitors you're trying to use. Pretty much every aftermarket GPU these days (if not all) can handle two monitors, and some motherboards have multiple built-in video out ports. Regardless though, do your research before hand.
