IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY, READ CHAPTER ONE BEFORE YOU READ THIS ONE:

Every step up the long, winding staircase was agony. Ghost’s right foot and arm ached from where the bullets had struck them, and blood leaked from his wounds. He had bashed his head when ducking behind the statue and so this throbbed too. John was long gone, dashing up into the protective arms of the citadel and the soldiers who guarded it but Ghost knew where he’d be. He would be in the throne room, at the top of the building. Groaning in pain Ghost realized there was no way he could get up there in his current state with his current injuries, even without the dozens of soldiers that undoubtedly blocked his path. He hadn’t thought to bring extra clips for his revolver. He didn’t think he need it. Counting the number of shots he had fired, Ghost realized he had only seven bullets left.

John had to be stopped. He had to die.

An idea struck him and he reached for his back pocket, pulling out a small radio transmitter that he had smuggled into the city. John hadn’t wanted he or Tad to bring any form of communication with them into the capital and now he realized why. As he hauled himself up another spiral of the stairs he heard a low rumble in the distance, sounding like thunder. Odd, he thought. There had been no signs of a thunderstorm picked up by GC’s satellites which monitored the planet's’ weather. However, instead of subsiding after a few seconds as thunder should, the rumble continued for longer. All the remaining colour in Ghost’s face drained as he realized what it was. Artillery. John’s men were attacking the defences of both his and Tad, most likely making huge gains. If they broke through the Murus mountains his land and his people would be defenceless to John’s tyranny. Suddenly this was no longer about him and John and Tad, it was about all the citizens across the entire planet. He thumbed the communication key on his radio, but was met with nothing but static. Of course. John would be jamming the radio frequencies in the citadel. He needed to communicate with his men, a final goodbye, a final order. The only way to do that was to get to a window: if John was still using the 20-year-old technology that had been in place when they were younger this would allow him to communicate freely.

A crash sounded from the bottom of the stairs. The soldiers’ outside had finally broken through the mighty citadel doors. He heard their exclamations of horror and dismay upon finding their fallen comrades, and then the mass exodus of feet towards the stairs. It wouldn’t take long for them to reach him. The only way to escape was up, there was a room with a large balcony directly above him but he wasn’t sure he could reach it in time. Heaving himself upwards, Ghost continued. Every step shot daggers of pain up his leg but he forced himself onwards. Upwards. The fate of their planet relied on him. Finally, after what seemed and felt like a lifetime he reached a large and spacious landing. The stairway continued above him and before him a stout oak door barred his way to the room. Beside it was a keypad. Ghost limped towards it as the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs got closer. He could hear men shouting from above as well, although further than those who rushed up from below. Frantically tapping at the keypad, Ghost chuckled to himself as he remembered the code John had always used when they were children. He entered it and heard an electrical click as the mechanical bolts behind the door slid open. Shoving it, he rushed into the room and slammed the door just as the first of his pursuers made it up to the landing. The lock clicked shut. Sighing, Ghost lay panting for a moment as he heard the footsteps rush by. He began to drag himself towards the closed doors of the balcony on the far side of the room where the rumble of artillery was noticeably louder when he heard a shout from the stairway outside. “WAIT!” called the voice. It spoke with authority, it had to be the leader of the battalion from outside. “Six of you, check the rooms on this floor! Make certain he has not eluded us!” the voice ordered. There was a shuffle as half a dozen of the footsteps detached themselves from the main group, which continued up the stairs. There were only two rooms on this floor. Ghost heard the footsteps walk towards the other one and sighed. He still had time whilst they searched it. He stood up, but was immediately forced to sit down again by an overwhelming feeling of nausea and lightheadedness caused by the blood he had lost from his injuries, which still oozed blood. Dragging himself to the window, Ghost tried his radio again. This time he heard a babble of voices come back and realized he was on the Air Traffic Control channel of a nearby Tad’s Cobras airbase. He had no time to listen to the conversations, but the airbase gave him an idea. Switching to an encrypted frequency that only he and his most trusted subordinates had access to, Ghost gasped “This is Commander Ghost, do you read me?”. He was shocked by how weak his voice sounded. “Ghost?” Came the astounded reply. He recognized it as Realots, in the background he could hear the sounds of aircraft, artillery shells landing and men shouting. Realots was the commander of Elevated Stronghold Invictus. “We thought you were dead, John is attacking! ES Acies has already fallen and ES Summa is having a bad time of it… there are far more of them than we expected. Should we fall back? What happened?! I-” Ghost cut Realots off before he could continue, he had heard the six men coming out of the room opposite. “I don’t have much time,” he wheezed. “Tad is dead, John double-crossed us. Do not fall back - hold the strongholds’, they’re our only hope…” he paused as he heard a crashing on the door to his room. “OPEN THIS DOOR!” came the shout from outside.

Speaking quicker, Ghost continued “Look, I don’t have much time. There’s not much hope of me getting out of here alive. I want you to take command of Ghost’s Cobras. Hold out for as long as you can. Don’t let John get through without giving him something to remember us by. I want you to do one last thing for me. I’m afraid it’s probably going to cost us an aircraft…”

Ghost explained his final orders to Realots whilst the battering continued outside. Behind him, the sound of artillery had increased as his own men and those of Tad added to the symphony. Then, the great oak door flexed and splintered. They were getting in. Hauling himself upright, Ghost once again drew his revolver.

Six men. Seven bullets.

What he was about to do, if he pulled it off, would be sung about by bards for decades to come. His shooting would have to be fast and his aim would need to be true, but as of yet he had a chance of escaping the room with his life. He aimed the revolver at the doorway, pointing it at head height. Taking a deep breath, he trained his eyes down the sights and waited.

The door crashed off its hinges with a boom that for a minute drowned out everything else. Ghost fired immediately at the man who was rushing through it, closely followed by one directly behind him. Neither were wearing helmets, they had grown hot from running up the stairs and hadn’t actually expected to find anyone in their search. Ghost’s bullet hit the lead man directly in between the eyes and travelled through his brain, out of the back of his skull. Its momentum did not end there, however, for shedding chunks of gore as it went, the bullet buried itself in the eye of the second man. Both dropped, dead before they hit the floor.

Under his breath, Ghost uttered the word “One,”.

The remaining four men jumped backwards out of the way of Ghost’s second bullet, which missed them all.

“Two,” he muttered, angrily.

Cursing, he ducked behind a desk and once again trained his gun at the door. One of the soldiers tried to rush in, but Ghost’s gun spat a bullet that caught him in the neck. He dropped to the floor, gurgling, drowning in his own blood.

“Three,” Ghost reasoned.

The three bodies were proving to be a hazard to the remainder of the guards, they blocked their easy access to the room. Two of them rushed in and tripped. Ghost was able to take one out with a shot to the face before the other one regained his composure. Joined by his final companion, the two men pointed their guns at Ghost. All three men stood still, panting. Exhausted.

Calmly staring at the men who stood before him, Ghost said, loud enough that they could all hear him “Four,”.

“It’s over,” said the soldier on Ghost’s right, the one furthest in the room. He seemed unfazed by Ghost’s tally, although he was unsure what it was he was counting.
“John wants you alive,” he continued. Signalling to the other man, the soldier indicated he should take Ghost Prisoner. Trusting his colleague to have Ghost covered, the left-hand soldier set his rifle on the floor and moved towards Ghost, drawing rope from his pocket. Ghost could not shoot him without immediately being gunned down by his colleague, the soldier reasoned. A thundering of footsteps could suddenly be heard from above as the soldiers who had gone upwards, joined by those who had been searching the building from top to bottom realized Ghost must be in one of the rooms they had already passed. The soldier pointing the gun at Ghost glanced upwards instinctively. That was his mistake. Seizing the moment, John pointed his revolver at him and shot him dead. He let out a low grown and crumpled to the floor. Smiling at the unarmed man who had just stopped dead just out of arm's reach from him, his jaw dropped in shock, Ghost said “Five,”. Swinging the gun round before the man had time to regain his composure, Ghost fired again.

“Six.”

By now the men from upstairs had reached the floor, and seeing the shattered remains of the oak door, partially blocked by the pile of bodies, rushed to the room. There was at least twenty of them. All of them kept their guns pointed at Ghost who dropped his arm to his side. John strolled into the room. “Brother! You’ve been rather more of a headache than I anticipated!” said John, cheerfully. “No pun intended,” he said, indicating the men who Ghost had dispatched with shots to the head. “I have, however, decided to keep you alive so you can watch me dismantling your precious little empire piece by piece, and then slaughtering all who serve in your army, as well as their family! It should be rather fun, I think.” Ghost remained silent, sweat and blood dripping from his tattered body. Having not got the reaction he had wanted, John frowned and continued. “One of your precious strongholds has fallen already, I anticipate it won’t be long until the others follow suit! We have gained total aerial superiority over your air force, all of your planes have been captured or shot down.” Reconsidering, John conceded, “Well, all except for one, but we’re not entirely sure where that one went..”

“You’ll see,” was all Ghost offered in return to John’s questioning expression.
“I look forward to it!” cried John excitedly as Ghost chuckled to himself. “Now, you shall come without resisting, if you try and cause any trouble my men will shoot you in the knees, although we shan’t kill you! Rest assured you have many days of misery left before you can escape this world!”

Fixing his brother with a steely gaze, cold and calculated, Ghost said in a voice barely above a whisper, but packed with enough power and authority that the whole room heard it, one word.

“Seven,”

Pointing his revolver upwards, Ghost fired under his chin before anyone else could react. The bullet went through his head and he dropped to the floor, lifeless.

No one moved. John walked over to the body of his brother and nudged it with his foot. “Pity,” he murmured, before turning and striding out of the room. “I shall be in my throne room. You may now call me King Cobra,” he dictated, as he left. Turning, he said, “Somebody clean up this mess, I rather like this room.” Then he was gone, up the stairs to sit on the throne he could now call his own.

The rumble of artillery continued in the background as the three armies collided again and again, dealing death, pain and misery on an industrial scale.
