As someone who wants to go to UT(one of the most expensive in Texas), I would rather pay than get a free education. It costs money to run a college, and even more to get a higher quality education. The local college in my town is like $2000 a year which isnt even a 1/5th of UT. Ive been saving my whole life to go to a nice college and to get that for free would simply be wrong. Getting a great education shouldnt be free and paying for said education is how things should be.
If I was less fortunate and didnt have the job opportunities I have and have top 2% of my class grades, I would be just fine with paying to go to my local college which is extremely cheap compared to a normal. Colleges cost millions and millions just to operate annually, and adding that to the tax would make everyones life worse.
People who seriously want free college are simply lazy. I dont get society sometimes |

| As someone who has a free ride through college thanks to my scholarships, I respectfully disagree, but to each their own. |

According to the Bernie Sanders campaign, free college could be completely paid for by taxing Wall Street speculation. And lets all agree, Wall Street doesn't have enough taxes.
And why should paying for education be the way things are? Education is important, it's the tools for success. We want people to succeed in society, don't we? And college is one of the most surefire paths towards sucess. People need college to succeed, but they can't go to college unless they have the money to do so! It's a damn Catch-22!
And how dare you suggest that people who can't afford college are lazy! Tell that to the working class coal miner who works 12 hours a day just to put food on the table, or better yet, the countless people who are crippled for life by student debt!

Also, I forgot to add: Unless we're talking about those godawful for-profit universities, colleges already recieve public funding from THE STATE. The free college plan would expand funding to cover the remaining costs.

Never said anything about mentally handicapped/crippled. And college is nowhere near necessary. Plumbers commonly make $80 an hour without a college education that they paid $150k+ for. There are plenty of affordable colleges out there already. Applying for scholarships at multiple colleges could pay for a huge chunk itself at many colleges.

| I mainly disagree with the top universities being made free. Local/small colleges made free is pretty fair to me, educafion wise. |

as someone who's parents are disabled/can't work and get disability checks every month due to that fact, i worry constantly about not being able to go to college and making a living for myself. i know there are scholarships, and i try hard to get them, but if you want to become a psychologist like i do then scholarships won't cover much. free college would help not only me, but tons of others out too. it would let me go to college, eventually afford a home, and be able to be an actual citizen. not to mention that we could probably take some money from our military and put it into colleges without any harm. our military budget is sky high, bigger than several BIG countries put together.

You're wrong about the plumbers. In America, plumbers have to spend 4-5 years in an apprenticeship program, which includes classroom work. And you know where one of the places you can get that apprenticeship is? COLLEGE.
Also, you seem to underestimate how poor some people in America really are.

Plumbers do not make that wage "commonly" and if they do, it is often inconsistent rates. The truth is that college is becoming a necessity. Sure there are success stories here and there, but the same could be said for those who did not complete a high school education. Simply put, I had the advantage of a scholarship and I took it. Not everyone will:
A) Have those advantages B) Have the funds to counteract not have those advantages
Not to mention, many people don't go to college directly out of high school and if a waitress wants to turn her life around and follow her dreams, not only is it the economical and logical thing to allow, but also the moral one.
You can't state that college should inherently be paid for because that is simply an opinion with no backing. Someone could say the same for highways (or any other government program paid by taxation). |

| Flexaboost, under his plan, you still must meet the academic standards of that universities, which most top-tier colleges have much stricter standards. |

Yes, and poor communities tend to have worse education, thereby making the likelihood of getting a scholarship low.

I completely understand that. I come from a tiny, poor coal town in Virginia. It's rough and I was incredibly fortunate to get the opportunity I did, but of course a lot of people don't have those opportunities. |

Taxes, of course. You know, the same way we pay for every other public utility, including funding for colleges.

Our current tax rates aren't going to cover all of it, meaning that now taxes are going to be raised.

Yes, new taxes and tax raises will be required. However, for ordinary joes like you and me, the increase will be minimal, barely noticeable. It will mainly affect the wealthiest citizens of our nation, who lets be honest are not taxed enough.

But how is this tax increase fair to those not planning on attending college?

Taxpayers already pay for a lot of things that they don't use, mainly the military, subsidies for various businesses and industries, and public education.

Now what about those living on the minimum wage and can barely even afford to support themselves? Now you are adding a small tax increase which can add up over the years and causing these people to loose more money?
