North Korea has a history of giving extreme punishments that don't fit the crime.. The USA should ban tourism for its citizens. As in not allow Americans back in the country if they go there. That way no one would risk it.

And he is 21. That means he will be 36 if he ever gets out. The best years of his life will be spent starving in a North Korean labor camp. He probably will never have kids and his family will spend the next decade and a half unsure if they will ever see him.

He may be stupid but everyone makes mistakes growing up. The real issue is North Korea's legal system.

Yes and he's paying for the price of his mistakes.
I agree it's a bit barbaric but he well knew what he was doing and what might happen, especially in a place like NK

Actually he probably didn't realize that things like this happen. Living in a country with liberties and human rights (which are rather arbitrary but doubtlessly desirable) he probably took these liberties for granted and has never been exposed to the ruthless reality in North Korea.

He collects signs dude.
When you go into NK you are warned before and during multiple times what you can and cannot do.

His entire life has been spent in the United States of America. My point is that he probably assumed that petty theft would be treated with a punishment to match the crime similar to how it is in the United States. This seems like a reasonable assumption but there is nothing reasonable about North Korea and in reality crime an punishment is rather arbitrary so this is a tough lesson for a first world US citizen to learn.

I heard that the camera man had to leave North Korea because he payed down in order to take a picture of a really high statue of Kim.
They could make the kid pay money or at least force him to make a better design of the poster |

Actually he went through a Chinese tour because the USA advises against travel to North Korea. He had to fly there from China. The USA doesn't even have an embassy and has to communicate through the Swedes.

I know that. But you can look up trips to NK and you are warned before hand. And during, constantly by your guides.

Anyway, there is a documentary of North Korea where a famous eye surgeon heals 10,000 people from blindness and has a documentary team to go see what it is like living there and go interviews some NK defectors

Look. He's 21 and being given the opportunity to stay at the NK hotel in Pyongyang gives anyone the impression that NK is a wonderful country. It's a luxury hotel that hides all of the unfortunate happenings in the country. I don't blame him although it was a stupid decision. We all make mistakes and it's not our position to bash him for it. The real issue like wuss said is the legal system.

also view this from our standpoint
how'd you like it if some tourist comes from a country you grow up learning to hate on the other side of the globe and marches right up to a courthouse or something and grabs the flag off the mast and makes off with it
