Whenever you look at the terrain of games like Apocalypse Rising and Phantom Forces, the terrain was all made using the GapFill studio plugin.
No one can build well or even design a decent terrain by hand anymore it seems. What's with this?

Never
The good builders never find anyone to make their game a reality. Only the scripters have front-page games anymore.

apoc rising is probably too big to make anything that looks nice as it would just be a big collection of the big 2048^3 blocks
phantom forces has crappy maps though and not enough of them

it's simpler, which requires less processing power to run and with handmade terrain there's the chance of edges sticking out and catching players
...just like 7th grade |

Probably the best example of a good non-plug terrain builder is in Team Deathrun, but I'm not sure about user created maps.
