Hi. uh. I need some help with my pokemon Red team. So far I have a, Charmeleon Raichu Vaporeon pidgeotto Nidoking
I don't know if my last slot should be a Ghastly or a Snorlax. I have both of them but I'm just curious which is better in the long run.
Pikachu I choose you! Oh wait, that's charmander. They really should label these pokeballs. |

ghost types arent even that good in gen 1.
-only 2 stab moves, one of which does fixed damage
-said moves cant attack psychic pokemon because 10/10 programming
-psychic is SE against poison, which all ghost types are in gen 1 |

They can both learn physic. And since I need one of the 2 mainly for Agatha I was curious if better DEF or Special is better.

Generation I had a wildly different way to calculate Critical Hits than later games: they were based in part on the user's base Speed, which is why the metagame was dominated with fast Pokemon. For regular moves, such as Body Slam or Psychic, the formula for Critical Hits is:
CH% rate = (User's base Speed) × 100 ÷ 512
What does this mean? Let's take Persian for an example. Persian's base Speed is 115, which means that its Scratch attack has a (115×100) ÷ 512 ~ 22.5% chance to score a Critical Hit. Because Persian is one of the fastest Pokemon in the first Generation, it has nearly a 1-in-4 chance to land a Critical Hit on regular attacks, which borders on ridiculous. What if Persian uses Slash, which is touted as having a high critical hit ratio? The formula for attacks with high critical hit ratios is this:
CH% rate = (User's base Speed) × 100 ÷ 64
To use Persian again, this means that Persian's Slash attack has a (115 × 100) ÷ 64 ~ 179.7% chance to score a critical hit. Of course, this number is nonsensical, and the Critical Hit ratio is lowered down to 100%. However, due to a small quirk in RBY's programming, nothing in Generation I is ever 100%, but rather 99.6%; this means that Persian's Slash will land a Critical Hit 255 out of 256 times.

@soul_scythe
ghosts are still bad against psychic though because
1. all gen 1 ghosts are also part poison.
2. gamefreak's 10/10 programming made psychic immune to ghost |
