You have to look at it from a business point of view. They currently only have 8 healthy players. Waiving Chalmers gives them an extra roster spot so they can have 9 players.

an NBA team can have more than 9 players and they could've released someone else |

I'm not saying they can't have more then 9 players. I'm saying they could have 9 healthy players.
The grizzlies currently have 6 players injured (7 if Chalmers wasn't waived)
3 of the 6 are starters.(Marc Gasol is out for season, conley and randolph are day to day) 1 other person is day to day. 2 other people are expected to return before April 1st.
They could have cut someone else but it would have been idiotic.

who else is injured
and the Grizzlies need draft picks because they don't have young people to look into the future and all of them are pretty old
In a few years they'll be a bad team unless they get young players |
