Gulbadin Naib, playing in his first ODI for Afghanistan since February 2015, played the innings of his life to secure a stunning victory for Afghanistan.
The game looked dead and buried when Mohammad Shazhad, the man in the most form for Afghanistan was bowled with only 49 on the board, and then Noor Ali Zadran and Nawroz Mangal fell soon after, leaving the score on 66/3. Hashmatullah Shahidi, replacing the most experienced firefighter for Afghanistan, Samiullah Shenwari, and Mohammad Nabi, former captain, tried to resurrect the innings, but when the two of them were dismissed, once again in quick succession, the score was tottering on 121/5.
Enter Gulbadin Naib.
He was involved in a 25-run partnership for the 6th wicket with captain Asghar Stanikzai, but when the captain fell, most people counted Afghanistan out.
Then, in a gutsy move, the captain promoted Rashid Khan, the 17 year old legspinner, up the order, ahead of the big-hitting Mirwais Ashraf to number 8. Naib and Rashid added 15 runs in the time to the final 10, in which 88 were needed. The first three overs of the final 10 went by without any boundaries, in which 22 runs were scored, and then Naib kicked into top gear. Going 6-6-1-1 off Jongwe, with two more singles from Rashid, they took 16 from that over, to make it 50 off the final six overs. A silent over from Chisoro made it 46 off the final five, and then Naib took on Madziva, Naib smashed a six and a four, and Rashid managed to smash a four as well, coupled with two singles made it 16 off that over as well. With the game in the balance with 30 required off four overs, Chisoro bowled another tidy over to make it 24 off the final three.
Madziva was hit for a four by Rashid off the first ball, but responded well to remove both Rashid and Mirwais Ashraf before the over ended. Seven came from the over, to make it 17 off the final two. Chisoro erred once in the penultimate over, and was punished, not by Naib, but by his own keeper, Richmond Mutumbami, who missed the ball and it ran away for four byes. That made it 7 from the penultimate over, and with Naib on strike for the final over, you had to go with Afghanistan.
Earlier, Hamilton Masakadza's fourth ODI ton had seen Zimbabwe to 248. However, while he was batting, Zimbabwe looked set for 280, maybe 300. Peter Moor gave him company for the first part of the innings, and Richmond Mutumbami walked in at No. 4. A 40 from him set Zimbabwe up for a good total, but then the collapse started. When Mutumbami fell, it was 167/3 with a little over 14 overs to go, 250 at least. However, Afghanistan hit their lengths at the death, and apart from Sikandar Raza's 29, and Masakadza's 110, there was not much resistance. As a result, they were bundled out for 248 with a ball to spare.
In the final over, the final ball looked like it would be all the difference. With ten required, Naib got a two, then Madziva bowled a wide. Slashing hard, Naib edged one to the third man boundary, to make it three off four. Then, he ran a two to level the scores.
Zimbabwe 248 all out off 49.5
Afghanistan 248/8 off 49.3
Three balls to go.
Naib swung a half volley on the pads, and it went out, out, out, out, out of the park.
Six.
Afghanistan win the series 3-2. |

| Afhganistan needs to get their national games on national television. It's a heavily a Pashtun supported sport and is only available on Pushtu stations. |
