Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows

- It's just one of those sort of "mellow" songs that you can tap your foot to. You know, where the guitar is playing the off-beat and the bass and drum are on the on-beat? Not to mention the lyrics, which, while semi-cryptic when it comes to the meaning, just sound nice the way they're sung. Overall, a great song. I'd check it out.

--

Foreigner - Cold As Ice

- Definitely in my top 20 favorite songs of that genre and/or decade, It starts out calm and smooth with the intro, goes a bit further, remaining calm, and then blasts you with a part that I can only describe as sad and beautiful. A little bland in the sense that there's some repetition, but overall, a pretty good song.

--

Queens of the Stone Age - 3's & 7's

- Yes, back to Queens of the Stone Age. Again, I have no clue what this song is about, but it just sounds cool. Which will remain the reason I listen to music in the first place forever. Not much to say about this one, but from what I can tell, a good use of talent, instruments and symbolism.

--

System of a Down - Deer Dance

- What? I suggested something heavy? Like many of SOAD's songs, this song has lyrics that sound weird, and for all the right reasons, meaningful. To put it bluntly, imagine a song that can make you bang your head, tap your foot and the song itself sounds like nonsense. The prettiest nonsense you'll ever here. That's SOAD for you.

--

The Beatles - Michelle

- This may actually be my favorite Beatles song. The intro has a great use of chromatics, and the vocals just sound deep and meaningful. In other words, the guitar has a lot of notes that are only a half-step apart, and the vocals need no further explanation. But what else is expected out of a Beatles song, right?

--

The Beatles - Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite

- I laughed at that title when I first heard it, but it's actually a really good song. It's the reason Michelle only had a good chance of being my favorite Beatles song. The imagery in this one is just done masterfully, and it has a great sound. A combination for a good song, and when done right, a bit of a crazy one.

--

Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna

- My spell-check refuses to accept the name of the song, but that's because it's in Latin. And according to Google Translate, it means "FOREVER". Yes, in all-caps. If you like a sort of calm, yet emotional classical song, I say go for it. Not much excitement in it, but that doesn't mean it can't sound nice, right?

--

Coheed and Cambria - A Favor House Atlantic

- If that title made no sense to you, that's because you didn't read Claudio Sanchez's comics. This song is ironic in the sense that it sounds happy and lively and the rest of those nine yards, but it's about a prison escape. Hence the line in the song "Good eye, sniper. Now I shoot, you run." It's got a good rock n' roll feel to it, and, overall, makes you feel like getting up and being active.

--

Crush 40 - I Am All of Me

- If you're into Sega and Nintendo, or by some odd stroke of luck, you've played Shadow the Hedgehog, then you may have actually heard this song before, as it's the main theme for Shadow the Hedgehog. I know it's weird to treat an OST track like any song you have on your iPod (well, it is for me), but this song deserves some praise, as do Jun Senoue, Johnny Gioeli and possibly Takeshi Taneda and Toru Kawamura. This coming from someone who isn't much a Sega fanboy.

--

Davenport Cabinet - Nostalgia in Stereo

- For those of you who hate music that was written after 2008 and want to use older music as a medium to channel your complaints or those of you who just like to tilt your head left and right to the beat of an awesome song, this is a good one for you. One of few Davenport Cabinet songs I've heard (and the only one (seriously, who are these guys?)), I can tell that this might not be the only song by them worth listening to.

--

Globus - Europa

- No, not Santana's Europa. But that's okay, because this is one of those epic-type of songs about war that makes you think about a Renaissance-esque battle that doubles as a poorly-executed history lesson. Whether or not these guys knew what they were talking about in this song, I have no idea. Which means they're a few steps ahead of me. Nonetheless, listen to this song.

--

Kistune^2 (Kistune Squared) - So Happy

- This song totally went in a totally different direction from what I was suggesting before. I went from rock to nu metal to classic rock to classical to chiptune. This song sounds like a very happy song from an old video game. I think a Youtube comment put it best, "Bonus level! Yeah!"

--

Metallica - Battery

- No pun intended, this is an energetic song, which can be expected from a classic Metallica song. It starts out feeling very calm and warm. Maybe even cozy. But then they kick on the distortion and the song gets heavy. Once again, something to expect from a classic Metallica song.

--

Ozzy Osbourne - Mr. Crowley

- A song about the Great Beast 666 himself, Aleister Crowley. The song starts off all church-organ-y, but then, in true Osbourne/Black Sabbath fashion, shows its true colors. Even as one of the greatest/most mainstream songs I've heard, there's also a rumor I heard about the song's solo. Evidently, Randy Rhoads, Ozzy's guitarist, was angry at Ozzy, and so on stage, just started playing a jumbled mess of notes that turned out to sound awesome anyway. Now that's skill. Inability to play bad on purpose.

--

Serj Tankian - Harakiri

- Once again, my spell-check didn't like it. Or the composer, evidently. However, this is one of those ear-buttery songs that has a deep and powerful meaning. If you're going to listen to it, I recommend watching the music video at the same time, while at your own risk. No real human violence, but the images shown more-or-less tell the listener what's wrong with the world today. A great educational experience, I suppose.

--

The Pierces - Secret

- This song is so entirely different from everything I listen to on a normal basis that it makes me wish that I listened to more things like it at the same time. This coming from a semi-stubborn guitarist. That seems like it's all that need to be said, but I'll also say that it sounds old-timey and, overall, kinda creepy.

Rammstein - Waidmann's Heil (In English, Hunter's Salute)

- I'd be blunt about it and just say "This song is freakin' cool!", but it deserves better. If you're into a semi-metal-head-industrial sort of sound, this is a great song. You may or may not understand what the lyrics are, but that's actually kind of a cool thing about Rammstein. They prove that lyrics don't really matter. These lyrics remain a mystery to most Americans, but this band is most popular in the United States.

--

My Chemical Romance - Thank You For The Venom

- Most people call MCR emo. I tell them "Emo is defined as music where the composer more-or-less complains that the one they've loved the most is lost through either a breakup of some sort, someone died, or someone just can't be around someone else anymore by some means and so it's felt needed by said composer to write a song in which to convey their negative feelings and, therefor, MCR only has one emo song, which is even debatable to be emo." There's a photographic memory for you. But in all seriousness, this is probably MCR's heaviest song, and one of their best works. My brother even compared them to Megadeth, one of the most commonly referred to heavy metal bands in the world.

--

The Dropkick Murphys - I'm Shipping Up To Boston

- Who says Irish folk punk can't have a concertina? Nobody who understands the genre, that's who. This is one of their older songs, as far as I know, coming from the album "The Warrior's Code." It has a bit of an angry or ambitious feel to it, so it may actually be good for working out, or just blasting your head full of wanting to work. In other words, it probably increases productivity.

--

Blind Guardian - Battlefield

- This song belongs in a video game where you ride on a horse that's covered in machine guns that you use to fly over a Renaissance fair and shoot at people who chose the wrong time period to imitate.

--

E-type - Russian Lullaby

- If you're into techno, you'll probably like it. If you're into Russian music, you'll probably like it. If you like music that can make you dance, you'll probably like it. If you like none of the above, then you should try it anyway in someone else's best interest.

--

Sonata Arctica - Full Moon

- No possible combination of words can possibly describe this song, but I'll do my best. Imagine a nearly black blue night sky in which the aurora borealis reflects off of the moonlight and God Himself tells you exactly what you need to know to live a happy and eternal life. That is the beauty of this song.

--

Nirvana - Breed

- How could a 90's kid talk about his favorite music without mentioning some of Kurt's work? Evidently, this is Kurt Cobain's favorite one of his own songs, and I honestly have to agree; this is my favorite song by Nirvana. And guess what? It doesn't even have to make sense. Kurt actually didn't care about what words he used in songs, as long as he thought it sounded good. That's good enough for me.

--
Bullet For My Valentine - Disappear

- Haha, just kidding.

--

Scars on Broadway - World Long Gone

- This is one of those heavy-light-hybrid songs that just sounds cool. The guitar parts maybe simple but they still sound good. The intervals used on the power chords actually remind me of the Sonic 2 boss theme. Heavy, hard and beautiful. That's what you should expect from Daron Malakian. As well as inappropriate gestures toward his loyal fans. Seriously, I don't like that guy; just his music.

--

The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black

- I'd make a "If you haven't heard this song, you're living under a Rolling Stone" pun, but that doesn't make any sense, as if a stone is moving, you can't remain under it. You've probably heard this song, but it still sounds great, nonetheless. If you haven't check it out. It's one of the earlier rock songs to feature a sitar (The Beatles are even earlier, but whatever) and on top of that, it sounds friggin' pretty.

--

Queen - Stone Cold Crazy

- What? Thought I'd forget Queen? Well, I almost did. This song is fast paced, awesome and doubles as a weird story all at the same time. Again, you've probably heard it whether you know it or not, and again, it sounds cool, so with that recommendation, you might as well look it up.

--

Rush - 2112

- This song legitimately inspired a holiday in the music community. No, really. Ever hear of Rush Day? On 12/21, every year, people celebrate it. That's the power music has over people. It brings them together to celebrate a fake holiday based on a song that implies that music will eventually go downhill. And don't tell me that music is already going downhill; bad musicians today represent as much of today's music as your opinion means something.

--

Not much else I can come up with off of the top of my head, but a list I do recommend checking out for the reasons stated, f you'd call half of these reasons. Remember, if your opinion differs to mine, that's totally okay. Feel free to make your own threads about your favorite music. After all, that's what this sub-forum's about.

These are great! I've listened to 2112 before, it's awesome. And I love The Beatles, too.

Yeah, my music library is somewhat diverse. I don't believe in picking favorites with musical genres; I think songs sound good if they sound good.
