If you arent from the U.S or don't live in it the best way to explain is that the United states of america is one big country that runs under generally the same laws, but all states have their own variations of many laws, some dont have certain laws and some do, Ohio (A state) for example is a 'sovereign' state, meaning it runs by most of its own rules in a way. Some states like California are a little less free when it comes to Weapon (knives and such) and Gun laws, some, like Oregon has very open laws where most stuff is allowed. A lot of states in the south and a bit more to the east are more republican while more to the north and west we are a bit more democratic, both having ups and downs. Geographically all states are very different. Here in Oregon we all (90% of people about) live in a very rainy forested valley, and the rest of the state is very barren, then places like Nevada are super hot, dry, and little vegetation. Utah and Colorado and all states directly north are mostly Mountains. Then the Mid West (Middle, and a bit to the east) Are all Plains of Corn and Wheat pretty much.

Heyiz is right. We all have the laws the Goverment made up where we have to obey everywhere we go in the country. Then there's the state laws where we only have to obey in that state. Then the community laws we have to obey the laws in that community

For example California's Compton part of L.A has very tight weapon laws, but a lot of other parts of it, not as much.

Generally yes, but we also have state and city commissioners along with D.A's or District Attorneys and numerous others, but thats a bit more complicated than we need to go.

The USA is confusing and named their subdivisions sovereign states, despite not being states or sovereign.

ok i've heard enough
so in my head i see
little countries which follow a laws set by a main governing body (the state) and they have the freedom to make there own laws in the state.
In the EU it's similar but most countries don't allow local laws.
