Actually, I'm going to a college field trip, and I want to know which college is better.

depends on your intended major.
what do you want to do with your life? do some research on the professors that teach your program. |

My school isn't going to Harvard. It's either UC Berkeley or CalPoly.

You can't just judge a college in general unless it's based on sports, majors, or campus. So both are good imo, it depends on preference.

it depends on ur major
a college can't really be better than another unless it's legit reasonably bad which they usually aren't
so
if u have no major, then i guess u'll have to wait until you have a major to know which is better
it's like asking in canada, what's better NAIT or MacEwan? neither, both are amazing programs but it depends what you want to do ie. you go to NAIT for engineering, computers, etc and usually MacEwan for music, artwork (non digital), writing, etc

Ok, I guess I'll say I want to become a programmer, so my major would be Computer Science.
Which is better?

cal poly, then
berkeley is more about research, and cal poly is more applied |

If so, how come my parents want me to go to UC Berkeley, instead of CalPoly?
Their reason was that CalPoly was a public university.

berkeley is incredibly prestigious, following just behind the ivy leagues and stanford (and maybe the military academies +west point, mit, etc)
cal poly is a state college but still a very good college in california, better than ucsd or usd imo.
berkeley would probably look more impressive than cal poly but the programs for computer science would probably be better in cal poly
