-The Dawn Rises-

Many years have passed since then, remember in detail I cannot say I do, for it is not like to me to have in any event, but the important things about those burning hours in the dead of night on that planet of angry souls and cold steel, I remember in vivid detail the scent of chromium and fresh death that permeated the halls as I went about them.
In the few hours before, the air was palpably heavy, dread hung on the very edge, so obvious and clear what was certain to happen that it made doubt whether it was merely playing at realism as only to snatch away lest we set ourselves upon its verdict. The planet Arcadia, a damp, lush but otherwise fairly inhabited world with a long history that predated the Imperial forces arrival, they had surrendered peacefully, having given up the path of nationalism long before and resigned to contentedness within their simple but grand city of Alexandria.
A mere handful from the not-quite outer world of the empire, soldiers, strong in heart, disobeyed their elders, seeking glory and fame within the empire despite it not being the way of Arcadians, were not judged for their decisions, wrought was Arcadian history with conflict and imperialism to match the grandest of stellar forces. A relic of the Vaktovian era, the Arcadians had cut away from the Vaktovian empire’s influence, seeking refuge like so many others with a protector, the new empire, that the Arcadian people be defended from destruction. Arcadian people who now lay dead in the streets of the burning city of their city of Alexandria, where Imperial forces had quelled an insurrection among the world’s inhabitants, and they were right, the Arcadian soldiers of the empire protested their commanders and with success sought high positions by way of both valor and deception, for their own desires and proper Imperial standards.
The first moments in which we heard the fate of our home, exploded in righteous fury did the respected Arcadian soldiers of the empire, and the slow grasp of what it meant for their future, it could not be accepted, could not be bore, the betrayal, or was it in fact, confirmation of the empire’s fears? It did not truly matter and I can hardly recall that we made the distinction, for that from our view Arcadians has aspired standards and been wrought horrible injustice for it, such was the crime that lit the cold passion for what was next.
Down the halls of the capital marched disorganized legions, not knowing their position nor some even daring to consider the consequences of their alterable inevitable actions yet to come. And that is when he appeared, back from having been in the very same contingent that had scorched the great city, the highest general in the empire of Arcadian blood, strode down the runway lane from the commanders craft, with him walked ranking members of the empire, barely a one Arcadian but alongside him they made a silent, eerie march, like an army of its own right descending unto the battle. The dawn had come, without a word or sound or slight of glance did the loitering armies in their bunks swell into the halls, unopposed they did walk out of the main base and straight out into the short street to the capitol building.
Remember I cannot how many royal guards there were in the building nor how many had filled the street outside the capitol, or when exactly they had thought to barricade the doors, nor the sound of gunfire or the parley of swords, it seemed an orderly, unstoppable, unspeakable army had simply walked up the steps to the building, not breaking down doors but so much as if they were not even there, of anger there seemed little, smothered by the disbelief and cold veneration of the moment. Nothing was damaged, no bullet holes, a few stains, some shattered wood and metal, the army marched straight into the building and stopped right at the double doors to the main office, inside which a dozen officials of the empire and their generals were convening in silence, and having just heard a clamor from outside had found that outside the only window to the room, which overlooked a large landing pad with the imperial drop ships currently at station, discovered that what must have been a half million civilians were on-looking from around the outside fences.
From the men stopped at the door, as if it had always been, appeared the man in a black trench coat, no longer flanked by his associates, went straight to the double doors, pushed them open, the door guard whirled around and succinctly received a bullet to the head from the smoking revolver of the man who had just walked in.
Every person inside of that meeting room was shot immediately afterward, at which point the army proceeded back down the hallway, past the killed guards, who on second glance were friends, but we did not know them anymore, the blood stained insignia of our uniforms on the walls, fire had begun to burn the building from the inside out, who had set it I do not know, it was probably several.
Outside we marched right up to the nearest Imperial drop ships on the landing pad, and under view of hundreds of thousands of residents of the capitol, took off in as many drop ships as were needed and flew off into space.
Aboard ship YC-548 a group of soldiers, all Arcadians, passed around a bottle of conspicuous fluid and got rightly distraught, there was laughter, there was crying, there was mourning, it was a mix of feeling and emptiness that raged among the tiny ships in a big universe. All on course to ravaged planet known as Arcadia and to only them as home, both those of Arcadia and those not, in dread and hope of their future, but in one corner of the pilot cabin sat alone a man in a black trench coat, and he was smiling.

Beautiful word choice and diction. Excellent descriptions that invoke imagery. The emotions of foreboding and tension are wonderfully written out.

This is gold, well done. I look forward to the next chapters.

-The Fire on Arcadia-

I was on the streets of the ashen city, the charcoal of the burnt houses that I knew filled the air in an repressive smog, though I could see well in the mid-day sun the extent of the damage around me, crumbled brick and shattered stone littered the ground of the once great city of Alexandria.
I was hauling rubble out of a storefront to find supplies when a shadow fell over me and I turned upwards to where the sky had been darkened by an imperial drop ship, fear and anger raced through my veins at the thought of an imperial army come to finish us off.
I tore through the flaming wreckage towards where the ship, and apparently its several identical associates, was landing, I glimpsed many other people hiding around the clearing of what I figured out was what was left of the courtyard of the consulates building.
The ships landed and opened much to our surprise to reveal a slightly bloody and very morose legion of Imperial soldiers, but what was surprising was their reaction to the city, as they altogether awkwardly shuffled out of the ships they stared in shock, wept, or clenched their fists, and silently started unloading their ships and working their way into the rubble.
The leader of the ships, a black coated famous Arcadian general, and several other high ranking officers of the empire, made their way towards the partially still standing consulates building while their men idled, and several minutes later an announcement rang over the city loudspeaker that any surviving or at least not critically wounded members of the city consul were to report there for a meeting immediately.
Meanwhile the soldiers had begun to treat the wounded, hand out rations, and put out fires, which gathered most of the surviving population of the city to relief areas, it was estimated two thirds of the population was wounded or killed, cleaning of the city had begun and before the day end the council members remerged to announce that in light of becoming a target of the empire emergency special powers had been granted to the current leader of the armed forces of Arcadia, Castellian.

Arcadians had always been known for being strong of heart and short of temper, I could see it on their faces that something had changed, something had been taken from them, their homes, their families, but I think of all they lost I think nothing created the change in them so much as the loss of pride, it was the insult, the gall to attack them, it was that I think that hardened their hearts the most, and they were looking for a fight.
Of course there was a constant vigil for attacks from the empire but the coms’ were disturbingly silent, though the city was being rebuilt at a startling pace, the survivors worked at an almost inhuman pace, the city was rebuilt with an entirely new mind frame, no longer was this the city founded in peace, towers of metal a testament to a city built on the corpses of those who came before and the promise of retribution, Arcadians had given up the Imperial ways centuries before, but it breathed again in that city, a spark had lit in the people of Arcadia and every passing day I could feel it getting stronger as the sheer grip of their own militarism was almost stifling. Seemingly all by their own accord, Arcadians of all ages and lives started to become a living breathing machine of war, the cry of steel and the song of blood churned as the city rose, there was no attempt at coordination or planning because every decision seemed to already have been made in the minds of the people, ships were assembled, all manner of weapons, the flags were left up as current flag of Arcadia was its historic yellow backdrop with the empire’s gear on top and nobody had thought of a symbolic flag yet.

Without any apparent call or signal, one morning an hour after the last relief camp came down, the Emperor of Arcadia, walked out onto the balcony over the courtyard of the former Consulates building, within an hour, as if they had been expecting just such to happen, and they had, half of the population of the city had convened in the courtyard below, awaiting his words.
I was there in the courtyard listening as Castellian declared war on the forces of the empire who had betrayed us so, and that we were to conquer all nations on Arcadia and remove any footholds the empire had on the planet, I in the crowd gave the first rousing yell of Glory to Arcadia, Castellian and his newly appointed generals begun to assign roles and place mandates and quotas in preparation for the invasions, and the crowd dispersed throughout the city of New Alexandria.
Within the next few days most of the Arcadian people attended combat drills and military training, Arcadia had not known the likes of such addiction to war since times unknown, but one thing they did know about it was that they were extremely proficient in it, in all things they were hearty, stern, brave, and unyielding, and as such were all too eager when over a dozen newly constructed drop ships flew out onto the landing area.
They did not need to be told to board as they all but ran, their weapons gleaming in the sunlight and packs having been loaded for hours already, towards and into the awaiting ships, the drop ships and other fleet ships loaded amounted to over a thousand soldiers taking off into the sky, I among them, headed to the first and most important area on the planet, a place that controlled the planetary shield and primary empire base on Arcadia, it’s infamous nickname being The Stronghold.

Three thousand meters over the rugged, swampy landscape of Arcadia flew the first Arcadian star-fleet in centuries past, I stood in the center of the control pit as a dozen bridge officers went about their duties, seemingly unconcerned with the situation my mind raced with doubt and going over again and again the attack plan, I had been countless times to the facility at Stronghold and knew very well it’s defensive fortifications were nothing to scoff at, this would not be like at the capitol with a surprise ground assault, this was a military outpost that was prepared specifically for this kind of attack, and I knew this would be a battle hard fought but if successful guaranteed the planet’s subjugation and cooperation.
I was just about to ask the com sergeant whether there was any unsecured radio chatter coming from the base, it was unlikely but could be useful info, when the entire ship careened about a meter to the left and a couple windows exploded on the side of the bridge as warning lights went off, apparently we had just been fired upon, at that point I have honestly no god dam idea what happened nor very likely does anyone else recall accurately the situations that unfolded across the fleet, what I do know is that when we burst through the anti-aircraft fire I had descended to the lower decks to join the ground assault forces as originally planned, however upon my arrival the entire garrison had already made their jetpack assault jump because of our sudden decent and over-shot of the target, knowing that it would be incredibly stupid to try to jump alone I helped the remaining uninjured crewmen load bombs into the Bomb hopper as we had circled around to attack the artillery guns.
This went on for almost an hour, the inside of the ship was incredibly hot and the constant labor was making me practically hallucinate as we loaded bomb after bomb down and watched them drop over the targets. Nearing the end of the battle we prepared to drop our last bombs and while I was watching them fall out of the bay doors I was struck with an epiphany, we were only about a thousand meters up and a raven flew past where the bombers were falling, I assume because of the shiny casings on the bomb the bird made an attempt to snatch at the bomb casing, it was in that moment I decided on an insignia for my new Imperium, a yellow flag with the gear of the empire’s insignia with a raven clutching a bomb in its talons.
Immediately after seizing the Stronghold I drew up a sketch for it and gave it to my lead development officer, and I wanted it finished by the time we returned to New Alexandria.

In a city that had been rubble not so very long ago, the new flag of Arcadia waving proudly over the balcony on which Castellain, Emperor of Arcadia, was announcing to the populace the total unconditional surrender of all empire forces on the planet and unification of Arcadia, making New Alexandria the capitol city of the new empire, the crowd was uproarious as our forces had suffered almost no losses in our assault of the Stronghold with only 34 casualties.
When the crowd died down the Emperor continued by saying that although we have taken over our own home we are deep within the empire’s space, this means that eventually, they will come to reclaim this planet, and that we can either wait until they finally come to once again burn our cities to the ground, or we can strike and claim rightful rule over the empire as we were destined to do from the moment we had joined it, and gain vengeance for our fallen.
We surged with anticipation and pride knowing that soon the empire would come to know the fury of Arcadian justice, although just as fervently as we burned, inside of the hearts of a few of those still left from the times of peace, the first seeds of doubt began to grow as they wondered about the path Arcadia was now taking under the new emperor, all under the merciless eye of the raven that watched over New Alexandria from above the balcony.

The empire was in a state of disarray, I had been running down to the second adjutants office I think, yes, right past the big window in the south corridor of the HQ in capitol city, I was off to file some reports on civil disturbances in the 43rd sector, I had been looking out the window wondering what the empire was going to do, not that I didn’t trust the leadership of our new commanders but, ever since the assassination of the grand overseer and the treachery of our finest, some systems had lost faith in the power of the empire, foolish considering our sheer mass and strength I thought, at least, at the time.
All of a sudden, as I was pondering that, I was thrown to my knees, as an unearthly rumble was rippling through the ground, and I recognized it all too well, it was the sound of a planetary shield cracking.
I quickly realized we were under attack, I ran to the window and peered out, and almost directly in front of me a ship descended to the city, I could tell from the design, it was one of ours, it at first glance appeared to be flying one of our flags, until I took a closer look and saw the distinctive Arcadian yellow.
I gazed past that ship, there was more drop ships, most of a design I didn’t recognize, at least a dozen of them, they had lowered to the city and were blazing a trail through the artillery guns of the capitol. One of the ships had landed already, it occurred to me that as a ranking officer I should have been somewhere at that time, but I didn’t move, for I could not tear my eyes away, there was something about those ships, their flags, the way their soldiers on the ground below moved, it was distinctly Vaktovian and yet it was entirely different, they felt real, alive, the ferocity with which they crashed the guns and cut through rank after rank of the ensuing legions of the empire that had greeted them, it was addictive to behold.
At some point I remember them reaching me, I was almost shot right there in the hallway, the window I had been watching out of had been shattered at some point, I was planted against what was left of the windowsill as one of them disarmed and cuffed me, I was after all a ranking officer and therefore a political prisoner, I was lead to a room where the rest of the officers I recognized were already being held, many were quite afraid of what would happen to them, I myself on the other hand didn’t give it much thought as I examined the soldiers guarding us, NCO’s, but there was something about their eyes, yes I think it was their eyes, in their eyes I saw the very fire of life, and like back at the window, I could not turn away.

The ships of Arcadia stood proudly on the tarmac before the capitol building, overlooking thousands of citizens, hundreds of prisoners, millions via local area broadcast, and billions on the official empire planetary communication channel, standing on the platform before the building stood Castellian of Arcadia and his entire senior staff, the finest and some of the more well known of the empire’s soldiers, even more so since the events of the treason.
“People of the empire, my name is Castellian, newly appointed Emperor of Arcadia.
You most likely already know me or the names of the men around me from the empire propaganda net, declaring us traitors for the murder of the entire board of leaders, which we are, entirely guilty of.
For we will have no more of the antics of the ruling faction of this empire, and because of the ruthless attack on the innocent people of the former city of Alexandria, we, Arcadia and friends of our cause, seized the head offices in the capitol of the empire, and as of today, the empire and all of its holdings, are now under the command of the Arcadian military.
I declare as of this moment the creation of The Grand Imperium, under which fair, and just ruling, the likes of which the former empire knew not of, shall be carried out to the greatest of our abilities. Hail Arcadia!”
To which the unanimous response was from the entirety of the Arcadians, a portion of the audience, and even a few of the captured soldiers, “HAIL ARCADIA!”

-For Glory-

Aptly named flagship of the forces of the Imperium, the gem of the Arcadian fleet, SS Corona led a hundred drop ships filled with the finest shock troops in the known galaxy, made their way towards a large planet in the outer empire that had long since successfully resisted the rule of the Imperium, its fighters were second to none, however their numbers, while not small, were not impressive, and their technology was sorely lacking, for these reasons however special exceptions were made for the conquest of this world, being that as many prisoners as possible to be taken for the glory of the Imperium.

It was true that many of the soldiers of the Imperium were in fact not Arcadian born but were taken from other planets, just as the original empire did with the Arcadian soldiers, it was actually how most empires consolidated their armed forces, and of course this planet, ruled by an iron fist, teeming with barbarians and invaders, was considered to be quite a valuable asset, for that reason the Imperium had deployed only it’s very finest to this, if not taken seriously more losses could be incurred than willing captives secured.
I pondered the intent of our mission, I had been on a few of this sort.
While it was true that on occasion the Imperium was known to simply dispose of brutal governments and decommission their military, other times such as this we were instructed to not so much battle the enemy but to siege them an engage them in hands-on combat as to take as many captives as possible, which, if we wanted to avoid serious causalities, meant moving at a snail’s pace through the invasion.
It was generally long and grueling but at least it lacked the destructive anarchy that came with blitzkrieg styled combat that we employed against other empires, having said that I was both afraid and giddy at the reality that I would be forced to use all that I had learned in my short training to stay alive against what I had heard from my bunk-mates to be, an extremely lethal, but obviously barbaric and quarrelsome people.
I had even heard the craziest rumor about them wearing big red frilled hats, how nutty is that?

I wasn’t afraid, as I ran through the cold, lightly snowed battlefield, strangely lacking in corpses for the most part from what I had heard about invasions, but of course they would exaggerate such things, then again how I know it was my first invasion, and so far I had yet to even see one of our enemies despite having landed hours ago.
Mostly it was a lot of walking, trudging through cold hard ground through the woods and plains, this enemy was notorious for ambushes so we apparently had landed a good few miles away from the settlement, in fact ours was one of the farthest back landing craft as we were carrying less experienced troops, not that it mattered because I was fully capable at fighting, I was one of the best among the trainees and even challenged some of the Vanguards when I got try, god my feet are killing m-
Then I heard the sound of a small detachment of men crashing through the underbrush, there were quite a number of other soldiers within my area but this squad of four was running and talking into their hand-radio’s, they were heading for a clearing where I thought I saw some commotion up ahead, naturally I sped up to investigate, about a minute later I reached the clearing only to spot a small handful of extremely unusually garbed men with swords defending a small out-cropping, they were quickly being surrounded by oncoming Imperium soldiers such as myself who came in from the surrounding countryside.
The four men that were in front of me I realized had already engaged, and were valiantly trying to overcome the outcropping, I moved in to help them and pulled my blade, which stuck a bit from the frost, and charged towards the one of them that had a strange hat, I thought I heard one of the Imperium soldiers say something in my direction but I didn’t get long to contemplate it as the man I had charged had locked swords with me, parried, and stepped back, so I moved forward, which came naturally to me because of my training with swords from sparring practice, however I failed to adjust for the rock outcropping and tripped, albeit for only a second before I caught myself and raised my sword for a block, only to discover that he had rushed forward, his blade connecting with mine hard and knocking me backwards over the outcropping, and in that moment of free fall he reached out and managed to grab my sword hand, not being able to do anything except possibly get impaled, I let go of my sword and rolled back away from the outcropping.
I was now disarmed and though I could have gotten another sword, I watched as the rest of the Imperium soldiers managed to overcome some of the fighters and had flanked the outcropping, however the big hated, and to my disgrace, now two handed wielding fighter turned into the fray and had almost pushed the soldiers back, it was at this point however that at least a dozen other soldiers had finally reached the area, in only a minute most of the fighters had been disarmed or wounded, save for the one with the hat.
He was utterly surrounded by 7 soldiers at the brink of the outcropping around him, swinging madly at the oncoming attacks and somehow managing to even knock down some of the unsuspecting attackers, one of the better Imperium fighters knocked one of his swords away, to which he responded by throwing his other sword directly at that fighter, which skewered the man’s arm as he tried to block it, he then knelt and hoisted from the ground a standard of red bearing the insignia of the tenth legion.
For a moment I wondered if this man was insane, standing there holding a standard utterly surrounded by soldiers, when he quite unexpectedly used his foot to rip the flag right off of the pole, which he then brandished by swinging it and knocking down two of his assailants, this went on for another minute or so before someone finally seized the pole from his hands, he straightened himself and removed his helmet, dropping it into the fresh fallen snow and raising his hands as two of the legionnaires seized his arms and led him off with the rest of the captives.
Long after the platoon had moved on to the encampment around the enemy fort, I remained, practicing somewhat with my returned blade, it’s blade utterly sheared from use in that small time, and in the falling twilight of the cold, wood covered landscape of this strange barren planet, I lifted the helmet and shook it off, contemplating the strange “barbarian” I had seen, and if I would ever see the prisoners we had taken here again?

I straightened my coat as I walked down the corridors of the SS Corona, the outfits weren’t bad, not the worst I have had, but certainly not as flexible or armored as I was adjusted too, it constantly needed to be shuffled a little, altogether the new gig was a bit tiring, it was hardly the first time I had changed insignias.
I hardly even had to be convinced, I never much cared for the Imperator and things had been falling apart recently anyway, it could hardly be considered treachery, and besides I was not the only one, I recognize many of the soldiers here, and the others who defected along with our commander during the assault.
It really wasn’t much of an adjustment, spent a couple of days in the POW cells on the Corona while they mopped up the rest of the resistance, we were to be brought back to the Imperium for integration, our commander however opted to defect wholly and most of the officers and soldiers followed suit, combat is after all our calling, very few of us were conscripts, as per our request for military duty we were placed under observation for a few weeks.
I can certainly say I was not disappointed by the skill of these “Arcadians” their passion for conflict is well known to their enemies and myself, however they lack the assuredness that comes with mastery, their firearms were a new concept for many of the soldiers of the legion who served under me, I myself was not always a legionnaire and hence this was certainly not my first time with weapons of the like, there are those among the Arcadian officers however I saw in the battle wield impressive combat skills in firearms and melee combat, I think I might actually warm up to this place.
“Attention all crew, the Corona will be inspected for mandatory post-combat maintenance until it’s next deployment, please report to the re-dep offices for your next posting by 12 hundred hours”- The ship-wide loudspeaker buzzed, I headed towards the ship-docks, the Field Marshal overseeing our evaluation during our stay on the Corona was already waiting at the docking bay with the rest of the turn-coats from the invasion, I moved over to join them. “Alright, since most of you are assembled let’s begin, since you have been on evaluation I have found none of you to engage in any disreputable activity or that which would merit un-military behavior, ignoring that incident in the bunk room on the first day” at which point he reddened slightly, a reaction to the memory not shared by the former legionnaires, “I my official finding is that you are all capable soldiers, as such this evaluation is concluded and you are all free to disembark the ship with the rank of Initiate in The Grand Imperium, good day men”
The city of New Alexandria, it was impressive to behold as I walked down it’s streets on my way to the Grand Academy, I had grown rusty during my several week absence from anything above rudimentary training exercising that we were instructed to engage in, and I was interested to see what the Imperium’s finest had to offer, if the city was anything to go by it would certainly be acceptable, I entered the Academy main hall in my Initiates uniform, coincidentally there was training drills going on at that time so I joined them, the warm up was rather on the advanced side which was pleasing to know, it was about half initiates like myself, a few even that were on the ship with me and others from a variety of sectors I recognized and some I didn’t.
The rest of the training was rather simplistic, though I did get the chance to duel some of the better of the Imperium’s fighters I was not surprised that I was as always, mostly unchallenged, I returned to the Academy many times after that and eventually me and most of the other Legionnaires had been promoted up the ranks, our skills were generally a cut above the rest of the troops, but as we made more ties with the Arcadians we drifted more, forgetting about the old legion and focusing on Arcadia, and through the months though it was not known to us, through our buildup we had harbored in fact such strength that Vaktovia itself feared conflict with The Grand Imperium.
One day not a while later when I had attained Vanguard for exemplary ability, we received word that we had a border dispute with one of the oldest empire’s in the galaxy, not so much the strongest for sure but truly they were ancient, and it seemed that Arcadian command had little tolerance for their antics as we declared full war shortly thereafter, though it was not a long war, it was somewhat challenging and through it I passed up to Legionnaire, on the verge of attaining my old legion rank I had committed myself to the Imperium, though, I had made a few enemies amongst the ranks during the war with my attitude towards combat that was not shared by some of my superior.
There was something about Arcadia, I could sense it in the city, it was dark and looming presence, it sent chills up my spine, a sort of malignant growth of what could almost be called factions had started to form crease-lines in among the officers, the cause of which I did not know, though it reflected in their treatment of their duties and those around them, it was a silent stress that pulled slowly tighter, almost as if there was a threat on the horizon.
However, I would not have long to contemplate this, for after the war and attaining my desired rank, after a few fights to many with the officer core over these impending issues, I opted to resign my commission with an honorable discharge, and retired to New Alexandria for a time, though I was far from being old I simply didn’t see the need to concentrate on fighting for the Imperium, it was rather stable and I was the most decorated of its elite, so I was content to let the politicians hash it out.
How foolish of me, had I known then what I know how I would never have turned my back on the changes taking place in the Imperium, in hindsight I should have predicted them, for the Imperium was so very large and very strong, it should have been obvious that it could not stay as such, and I’m sure that somewhere, someone looked over my resignation, pleased to see that an opponent had been removed from their plans.
