What is your opinion on the state of the ROBLOX game engine and its functionality? What about ROBLOX as a platform, and making games on ROBLOX?
Personally, I picked up Unreal Engine 4 the other day, and already the template map is looking a lot better than the majority of ROBLOX projects. It offers great options for programmer-designer collaboration, from setting up custom part settings ("properties in ROBLOX") to allowing your designers to modify things you've created with 'blueprint scripting'.
I'm pretty new to it but honestly? I'm probably going to jump ship. But the ROBLOX platform is fantastic (apart from the very high concentration of young users, which can be a good thing if your game is micro-transactions galore), especially free multiplayer servers. freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

| Well, I think my programming career started because of Roblox. I'm planning to learn other languages, but Lua gave me the base, made me understand Lua and coding itself. It will be a lot easier to do other things, but comparing to JS, Lua is a lot easier. I'm talking about Roblox.Lua. It would be good, if the developers of Roblox add more features in the future, so we can put all our potential into scripting and revolutionize games. It's already happening, but there are more to be made |

I agree, this is where it all started. Lua was a great choice for ROBLOX, being very easy to learn and drawing in a lot of people who want to start making games.
I never loved Lua like I love C++, though. It was just.. there. |

I'm mostly here for the forums. Actual development on roblox is too hard because of the large amount of abstractness and limitations.

"99% sure you can export/import stuff between roblox and UE" You can't import stuff into ROBLOX, and I'm not sure why I would want to export anything from roblox either :P |

| The problem with ROBLOX is this, look at the games on the front page, and then look at other games online. It's great for starters. |

Right now, I'm sticking to Roblox. I'm not studying to become a game programmer anymore since the degree track requires an insane amount of math, so I don't really need to move beyond basic game design. I'll just stick to my game simulation and design degree and keep using Roblox since it's free and easy.

Im sticking with ROBLOX for a while. Its a very good platform for multiplayer based games, because ROBLOX all traffic for you. However in terms of functionality, making games on in other engines like unity, CryEngine or Unreal (to name a few), is much easier as they provide full control over aspects like gravity and multiple cameras unlike ROBLOX. Also, they allow you to export as a standalone exe while ROBLOX requires their application to run games.

It's a good starter platform, though. Unreal and CryEngine aren't very user-friendly, but since Roblox is geared towards children, it's very easy to pick up and start making good games quickly.
Of course, it's just as easy to make clickbait garbage and have it be twice as popular as real games, but eventually those games will die off.

There's something very important most people here fail to see when they switch over to another engine or platform. ROBLOX isn't about being the best game engine, not at all, it's about the playerbase. Unless you make some sort of huge smash hit game when you move on to another game engine, way less players are going to play or even see your game at all. Unless you're already super successful, the engine is not the problem, getting players is.

You have a great point, but I'm not after making a smash hit game or really making money out of this so it's not really a problem.

If this is the case, just do what you think you can learn the most from, or whatever you think is more fun to do, really. If you can keep it as a hobby, you should, because having fun is really really important :P
But for anyone who wants to get recognized by companies or have something impressive to put on their resume, ROBLOX is great. You can't really say "I've had a million plays on my game" as easily anywhere else as you can on ROBLOX.

Oh wait there's a difference You can be famous and make a good game, and it still won't get popular
That's what happens on a site for kids |

| I'd agree with most comments that ROBLOX is more of a starting point. ROBLOX's engine isn't nearly as customizable as other free engines, but it is easy to use for beginners. The biggest thing that lets ROBLOX stand out, as OP has pointed out, is that it provides a platform for games you create. Servers, currency, and site functions are all handled by ROBLOX: the fact that you don't have to purchase and work out servers, handle currency and purchases, and that you only have to market to ROBLOX players makes it much easier to use. This is why you really don't see any giant gaming studios on ROBLOX, or actual gaming companies that use ROBLOX as a platform: it's more geared toward small, younger groups or individuals and at the moment is not at all worthwhile for a larger group of people. |

I quit in 2012 but came back when I heard about DevEx and had learned how to use Unity and C#. Haven't made any money yet but I have to say that ROBLOX has reminded me what I liked about making games in the first place. At its best it's a very capable multiplayer engine, at its worst it's a good little prototyping tool. Miles ahead of Game Maker, that's for sure.
It's delightful, It's delicious, It's delovely! |
