Why did I think this thread was a good idea? Oh yeah - the creation of characters is the WORST part of writing, and I don't think I'm alone with that opinion. So today my boredom decided to spawn my first out-of-character thread (which I hope isn't that useless).
I'm not experienced enough to grant everyone a full tutorial without looking like an incredibly pretentious and attention-hogging plank. Therefore, I will just encourage everyone to share their own techniques and tips so that eventually we have a big selection of ways to not create a god-awful character.
I'll start with mine.
After deciding what your character looks like and what their current situation is, draw a hypothetical timeline going down from their current position. Mark out the major events (birth, marriage, graduation, anything important) and fill in the gaps with little tidbits such as 'got a job at ___' or 'nearly got arrested'. Just make sure that everything leads up to where they are now and BAM, got yourself a backstory.
Anyone else? Veterans? Decent writers? Please help me to not look awkward.

First, this isn't your first out-of-character thread. You posted a thread asking for collaborators on a project that you gave the working title "centaurs" and which was officially named "Hunted Hybrids" when the collab was done.
Second, characters aren't the worst part of writing, they are, in some regards, the best. But in other ways they're also the worst. Everything about a CS aside from the personality and bio is easy - just put down whatever crap you can think of. Bio and personality are the only things that are difficult, although it's also worth putting effort into appearance.
De jongen drinkt de melk. All you need to know is that "Jongen" means "Boy" and you've learned yourself some Dutch. |

I can easily say that I disagree with this opinion 100% Character creation is amazingly fun. The only difficult part comes in finding roles for them, and even that just takes time. Of course, I'm the kind of guy who can think of a concept, appearance, story, and role for a character in just a few minutes So take my opinion with a grain of salt
Anyway, on topic My character creation process is pretty simple I think of a concept, then a name, then what role I want them to fill. I fill in the blanks based on that

Characters are fun to do, they're fun to write they're fun to write about and it's fun to write them interacting with other characters. They drive most of the story, after all, in my experience at least.
Writing them well, however, is frustrating as all hell. |

I love charactarization but I don't love character sheets.
It's hard trying to distinguish what this thread is actually about. |
