Section I

GENERAL BEHAVIOR

When at port, all ranks must behave appropriately, speak respectfully, and act in a mature manner so that The Great Navy of Britannia is reflected in a positive manner to all visitors. This includes, but is not limited to, wearing the correct uniform at all times, using grammar, and respecting superiors by using the terms “Sir” and “Ma’am.” For guidelines on who should be called by these terms, see below.

Landsman - Boatswain: Must call anyone of the rank “Midshipman” or higher “Sir” or “Ma’am.” *Note* Any sailors within these ranks will not call each other “Sir” or “Ma’am.”

Midshipman - Acting-Lieutenant: Must call anyone of the rank “Lieutenant” or higher “Sir” or “Ma’am.” Any warrant officers, within these ranks, are not forced to call each other “Sir” or “Ma’am.”

Lieutenant and Higher: Must call anyone that is higher than him/her “Sir” or “Ma’am.”

BEHAVIOR WHILE PATROLLING

While patrolling on land any member from the rank of Seaman to Boatswain should have his/her musket shouldered. Midshipman and above may choose to have the flintlock at ease, or may choose not to show a weapon. When below deck on a ship, weapons should not be equipped.

“Hold/Cease Fire!” - Stop firing all cannons and muskets immediately.
“Prepare to disembark/land!” - Prepare to leave the ship and report to a land area.
“Disembark/Land!” - Move from the ship to the specified land area.
“Prepare to board!” - Prepare to move from your ship to an enemy ship in an attempt to capture the ship and kill its crew.

“Prepare to be boarded!” - Come above deck to defend the ship and captain from the impending attack on your ship.
“Defend the ship!” - Defend the ship and captain of your ship from enemy attack.

SHIP PARTS

Bow: Front of a ship.
Stern: Back of a ship.
Portside/Larboard: Left side of a ship.
Starboard: Right side of a ship.
Gun Deck: The deck(s) with cannons.
Weather Deck: The deck above the Gun deck, the top deck.
Quarterdeck: A raised deck behind the mainmast; on small ships it is the area behind them helm
Forecastle: The basic structure of the bow
Aftcastle: The basic structure of the stern.
Bowsprit: The outward angled spar that sticks out from the bow.
Foremast: The mast at the bow of the ship.
Mainmast: The mast in the middle of the ship; it is the largest.
Mizzenmast: The mast at the stern.
Tops: The platforms midway up the masts that have one to three seats used for spotting and sniping.
Captain’s Quarters: A room on the stern, at the aftcastle that only the captain may enter.

FORMATIONS

Arrowhead: A formation in which the flagship, or the largest ship, is slightly ahead of the other ships. The second and third ships are slightly behind it on its right and left side. The fourth and fifth ships are slightly behind the second and third ships to the left or right. This forms the shape of an arrowhead. This is primarily an offensive formation used to attack hostile ships.

Spearhead: A formation in which the flagship, or the largest ship, is slightly ahead of the other ships. The second and third ships are slightly behind it on its right and left side. The fourth and fifth ships are slightly behind the second and third ships to the left or right. The sixth and/or seventh ships are lined up behind the flagship. This will resemble a tail. Altogether, it will look like a spearhead. This is primarily an offensive formation used to attack hostile ships.

Wall: A formation in which all ships are in a line. Each ship’s bow should be facing the same direction and its broadsides at the same angle to minimize friendly fire. This is primarily a defensive formation used to defend an area against hostile ships. This formation can also be used as a line formation to sail long distances in friendly waters.

Line: A formation in which all ships follow the flagship. They do so in a single file line. This is sometimes called column.

Box: A formation in which there is a ship at the front of the formation, and two ships directly behind it. The middle ship of the three ships in a straight line has a ship to its right and left that are even with it. This forms a shape that looks like a box. This formation is a defensive formation used to protect the ship on the inside of the box.

LINE TYPES

“Shoulder to shoulder!” - Form a line in which all units are side by side. The units’ shoulders should be almost touching, but not quite. This line should be in front of the commander, facing him.

“Single File! - Form a line directly behind the commander. All units should be in a straight line, directly behind the unit in front of them.

FACES

“Center Face!” - Face the commander.
“Right Face!” - Turn to your right.
“Left Face!” - Turn to your left.
“About Face!” - Turn completely around so you are facing the opposite direction you were previously.
“Right Incline!” - Turn halfway to your right (45 degree turn).
“Left Incline!” - Turn halfway to your left (45 degree turn).

MARCHING

The commander will order “Ready March!” and the units must be prepared to march. The commander will then order “March!” and the units must follow the commander carefully, marching where he marches. They must not jump over other units or exit the line of men. Once the units have arrived at the desired location, the commander will order “Halt!” and the units will stop marching. At this time, the units must spread themselves out if they got too close to the unit in front or behind them. The line should look the same as before the units started marching.
