As a mandatory subject.
Technology advances each year, and unarguably internet and computers are a large part of modern society. Do you believe kids should be required to learn some type of computer programming in schools?

Mandatory seems unnecessary. Be nice for kids to have that as an elective though.

yes
maybe not specific languages but simply the logic in general
elementary schools should use the code.org to introduce people at the very least

How to use computers and trouble shoot them with atleast a little ease should be mandantory. Kids should learn how to take care of a computer and how to make a computer or a basic electronic devic(such as a phone or remote, and not actually building a pc, just knowing about the parts insise) ALso typing class. ITs annoying when kids type lower than 30-20 wpm This isn't 2007 |

Yes, but let them choose between line-based and visual coding, because at first when I tried to learn that way I learned nothing through the visual version, and a ton by looking at wikis and learning languages like lua and stuff to start with.

Regarding how large of a role computers have today, I feel that they should learn how to use computers to some extent. (Basic typing, how certain things on the internet work), and possible a little bit of programming as children get older. It'll be good to implement in the public school system, but I do not see it happening soon. In the future though, I bet it'll happen.

And kids are becoming increasingly less and less knowledgable about computers because of the massive shift to mobile devices in mainstream society, which this would combat that. There are some kids at my school who are pretty much incapable of using a computer, I'm not joking.

They should seriously teach them something like lua, it's probably the best language to start with in my opinion.
Or maybe Python, although I never really had much experience with it.

I don't need typing classes here (over 100WPM; generally ranging around 130-140WPM), but other people need them at my school for sure, some of them only type around 12-24WPM.

@Aetricity
C is a good language in my opinion...
C is the language which is used in Linux kernel. C code can also be ported to C++. C can help a child program something basically awesome..
And later on they can move up to C++ and learn all the booster functions and new concepts.
C/C++ are widely used in games/OSes and pretty much everything.

I mean I would do C, but lua would probably be more simple.
Yeah, C could work too, and maybe even C++.

My WPM is extremely high, so I don't really need typing classes.
As for my peers, I can type around 3-10x faster than them for the most part. (~130-140WPM here)

Also programming classes should be taught by people who at least know what their doing with a computer. Im sick and tired of seing substitute teachers not figuring out how to change a slide during a class lecture. ITs going to be baseline to atleast work a computer in the future, we need to start prepping people now. PRogramming classes can be electives How to use a computer and how to type should be mandantory

Not for every school. I do know my school has a CAD/3d printing class working with modeling stuff on a computer but I think thats it from my knowledge, I might need to check the class list again

I'd really like it if you learned lua in 3rd grade, web design in 5th, C/C++ in 7th, and Java in 9th or something like that.
And in between those grades they can review more over the languages and stuff.
Honestly I'm not even that intelligent but I could still learn the basics of lua from nothing in only 3 days, and likewise for C++ I could learn the basics in just about 2 days. Each were in 3 hour sessions, and since the classes would be around 45 minutes you could easily do this in 8 days and have the last day for a review test, and in just 13 days a student could pretty easily learn the basics of lua and C++.
