I can't seem to relax when swimming with my face submerged. I know from a conscience perspective that I am perfectly safe, however subconsciously my body goes into panic mode and my heart rate rises making my run out of breath when swimming rather quickly.
I hear this could be attributed to lack of vision underwater -- my goggles are crap and it certainly isn't comforting to have your vision severely blurred when your oxygen is cut off.
Does anybody have any tips on how to relax yourself when your face/entire body is submerged. Specifically for freestyle swimming. |

You're never safe in water, keep that in mind. One, breath in, potentially dead. Foot stuck on something? Dead. Pass out? Dead. Have a seizure? Dead.
Be careful in water.
Also, while this isn't really safe, try testing your limits. Just start swimming to the bottom of whatever you're in repeatedly to get the hang of being submersed.
The best way to get good at something is to just force yourself to do it. |

1. Enter water
2. Slowly sink to bottom
3. Drown

I hate C&G and I run distance in track so I'm very familiar with normal exhaustion vs exhaustion caused by an artificial rise in heart rate.
What I'm saying is that the sensation of being submerged in water raises my heart rate. This is without any swimming, just being underwater. Holding my breath above water doesn't raise my heart rate so I don't see why it should underwater.
This is all without exercise. I'd like to be able to swim faster by lowering my resting heart rate while submerged and thus optimizing my oxygen usage.
Obviously my heart rate further increases when I actually start to swim. |

Calm down, I am like you. I do cross country, track, and swim. It just takes you getting use to the water. It is not something one of us can tell you on a reply, just keep practicing with your breathing.

Just go underwater often, and you will get used to the feeling of being underwater If it helps, take a shower beforehand or just close your eyes |

| BUD/s doesn't make you comfortable underwater they expect you to already be. And actually the reason I'm trying to become more comfortable underwater is because I'd like to tryout for recon after boot camp -- which is about 9 months from now. |

| You need to be able to adapt to environments that you aren't used to, like being underwater. |

| well get some good goggles first of all. I've been swimming competitively for 7 years now and still when I jump into the pool for the first time that season I still have a little freak out. Usually what works for me is to start thinking about stuff, or hum a little song. Maybe get a friend to go underwater with you and look at their face if you start to panic. |
