This might be the dumbest trade of the season.

I could understand getting rid of Kassian but Scrivens? He wouldn't solve anything in net. You've got Tokarski and Condon that are much better than Scrivens.

tokarski and condon aren't looking good with one of the best teams in front of him. scrivens performed around the same as those two did with a substantially worse team. he'll do better

The Oilers lost this trade. Goalie depth is always a huge advantage (something Montreal didn't have). Zack Kassian is absolutely worthless to a team.

"Zack Kassian is absolutely worthless to a team."

Except for whatever team he's playing against.

Reminder: MacTavish is still technically GM and poor Chiarelli can't blink without consulting the Big Mac

Edmonton traded a decent netminder for a neanderthal
Montreal GOT a decent netminder for a neanderthal
Montreal wins, no question

Here's a couple reasons why I think the Oilers went for this.

1. Scrivens is on the last year of his contract. Highly unlikely he returns next year, so they get at least a player in return (even if it isn't that great of a player).

2. Statistically, he wasn't even the Oiler's farm team's best goaltender, Laurent Brossoit was. Brossoit has 16 games played and a .928 save % compared to Scrivens' 10 games played and .893 save %. The Oilers might be more willing to give the call up to a young goalie playing well in the minors over a goalie with little potential left not playing so well.

"so they get at least a player in return"

You fail to realize that we're talking about Zack Kassian here, who is exactly like Rinaldo and Carcillo: A massive liability to every team he plays for.

A better, more accurate phrase to use would be "so any team the Oilers play against get a player in return".

This trade also frees up room for Eetu Laurikainen, another goalie prospect of the Oilers, to come over to North America and play for Bakersfield.

For both teams, there really isn't much to lose here. Both Scrivens and Kassian have fallen significantly from where they once were. If they become a good fit with their new teams? Good for them and the team. If not, they're both on their last year of their contracts. Both teams can let them go to free agency after this season.

Laurikainen had already been called back from his loan beforehand.

While he's put up good numbers for the worst team in Finland, I'd still have Scrivens over him at this point.

Hope this doesn't end up like Dubnyk.

I was opposed to trading Dubnyk, and I was vindicated.

But with Scrivens, I say this can go 50/50 rn.

The only problem I really have with Nilsson and Talbot is that in each month, one of them always sucks and the other is always good, but it's completely random on which one sucks and which one is good.

Last month it was Talbot who sucked and Nilsson who was good, now it's Nilsson who sucks and Talbot who is good.

It's basically like pre-Wild Dubnyk happening with two goalies.

I'm extremely doubtful that it will have to fall on Laurikainen's shoulders just yet. It would take some really bad luck to have Talbot, Nilsson, and Brossoit injured long enough and at the same time so that Laurikainen would have to be the starter.
