If you didnt hear, there are now bulletproof blankets specifically for school shootings in USA...

What kind of world do we live in?

How do people think the best solution to preventing more deaths in mass shootings, is to provide bullet proof blankets for children, instead of putting measures into place to take guns out of potential murderer's hands?

That's as effective as wrapping your wallet in tape to stop it getting stolen...

I agree that bulletproof blankets are stupid.

But what measures are you thinking of? I haven't heard any decent ideas from either side of the argument.

"But what measures are you thinking of?"

Well the first thing, which is pretty obvious, would be to make it illegal for civilians to own firearms.

>take all firearms from civilians

So... how are we going to defend ourselves in any kind of situation?

Not the solution at all

They need to make it so anyone with a criminal record isn't allowed to own a gun, same with mentally handicapped people

You wouldn't need to protect yourself in such situations if nobody had guns in the first place!

Not true

It will never be impossible for people to get guns

Say you hand yours over, and some sick dude decides to rob your house or try to gun you down when you don't expect it?

"would be to make it illegal for civilians to own firearms."

Because all guns will magically disappear when you do so? Do you realize how many sigmas and 22's are not even documented? And why even ban them? Why not just make equally effective regulations? Make restrictions for certain firearms for use in ranges only?

Banning them will not get rid of the cheap modifiable handguns used in your average convenience store hold up.

Take Australia for example.

In 1996, they had the Port Arthur massacre. 35 people were killed and 23 people were wounded.

After that the government were like "yanno, maybe it is time we banned guns."

The Australian people were like "well... yeah fair enough like, we dont want any other nutjobs shooting us up"

Since 1996 there hasnt been a single mass shooting.

Now I don't know if there is a pattern here... but it seems pretty obvious to me what the problem is.

True MadSanity

Not only that, but here's a few other problems that will arise

1) An increasingly larger illegal market for weapons, much like for "substances"
2) Crimes can be more easily committed by crazy people

No thanks, that would be hell

Call me a conspiracy theorist if you wish as well, but I don't really trust our government in the first place... Much less with all the firepower in the country.

@Mad

Wasn't a mass shooting

Obviously it won't be possible to get rid of all guns immediately and people would have them for years after, but the number of attacks would decrease rapidly.
And that is obvious...

With mass shootings increasing exponentially within the past few years? Absolutely not. What people need to realize is that it isn't ordinary, sane individuals committing these crimes. Don't punish the good people for what lunatics have done and are still doing.

- There are insane people in all developed nations across the world.
- You can illegal acquire a gun in all developed nations across the world.
- Yet somehow USA is the only one with frequent mass killings.

Explain that.

"Wasn't a mass shooting"

That isn't the point. The intent was to harm a large number of people. Saying it was prevented doesn't demean the fact that it could have potentially been, and thus proves that they still have a risk of a mass shooting.

"Obviously it won't be possible to get rid of all guns immediately and people would have them for years after, but the number of attacks would decrease rapidly.

Many handguns have a capacity of well over 10 rounds.

You don't need a semi-automatic rifle to do the same job.

The only difference here is one is easy to regulate, and the other isn't.

You're ignoring the part where I said crimes aren't committed like this by ordinary people

Why take guns away from them then? Hmm?

People will simply turn to the black market if guns are banned.
