Gr. 10 Canadian History
tl;dr version - Canadians built the best plane in the world but some butthurt Prime Minister cancelled it.
Canada is known as a ground-breaking pioneer in many fields and has impressed the world countless times. Of Canada’s numerous accomplishments, the Avro Arrow is the apex of Canadian innovation. The objective of the Avro Arrow was to form a strong defence of sovereign Canadian airspace. The result was a positive impact on the Canadian identity and an influx of talented aerospace engineers establishing Canada as a principal in the aerospace industry.
As Cold War tensions escalated, Canada recognized the need to create a sustainable defence in order to protect its northern borders. This imperative directed the Canadian government to commission A.V. Roe to design and build the CF-105 Arrow. The Arrow was a state-of-the-art jet interceptor capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 2 and altitudes of 50,000 feet. “Faster and more advanced than any other comparable aircraft, the Arrow was designed to carry air-to-air nuclear-tipped missiles to destroy Soviet bomb attacks over the Canadian North.” Less than four years after the first blueprints were drawn up, the Arrow made it to the runway and underwent many test flights. The aircraft performed superbly under all conditions and broke multiple records. For example, “To 2001 it still held the official world speed record for a single-engine jet fighter — 1525.95 mph.” This is a testament to the quality of Canadian workmanship and engineering, but nobody could have foreseen what was to come. After years of designing, engineering, and testing, the Arrow surpassed all expectations. Many prominent engineers had left their home countries in order to come to Canada and join the Avro team. Unfortunately, the world was now entering the era of long-range missiles which the Arrow was not designed to intercept. The British military declared that interceptors were becoming obsolete and in 1959, Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker, pounced on the opportunity to scrap the project. Because of this controversial cancellation, 14,000 A.V. Roe employees lost their jobs and left the country knowing that it was unlikely they would find another job in the Canadian aerospace sector. It was a monumental setback “for the thousands of highly skilled Canadians thrown out of work (many moved to the US where they were eagerly taken up by NASA).” In the words of John Diefenbaker, “There is no purpose in manufacturing horse collars when horses no longer exist.” From an economic perspective, his assessment of the situation led him to a logical decision, but the Canadian public never forgave him. The Diefenbaker government, under pressure from the United States, went on to purchase useless Bomarc anti-aircraft missiles and out-of-date American Voodoo interceptors. “Canadians bemoaned the devastation of the Canadian aircraft industry. Negative public reaction marked the beginning of the decline in Diefenbaker’s popularity, and led to his eventual defeat.” This triggered a “dark chapter in Canadian aerospace history” .
The Avro Arrow was a success while the program advanced but the end result turned out to be a failure. Its cancellation was a crushing blow to the Canadian economy and the aerospace industry. The negative repercussions had to be endured for years but Canadians persevered. Through confidence, determination and grit, Canada had built the world’s greatest aircraft and in doing so, demonstrated that it was a leader in the aerospace industry. This accomplishment boosted the Canadian identity and established a sense of national pride that is felt by all Canadians to this day.

Way too short. Then again, you're in grade 10.
In Grade 11, I haven't written an essay under 800 words yet. |
