I'm currently learning Irish on DuoLingo, but I have lots of spare time and my school's done for the year, so I've decided that I might want to pick up a third language. I'm not sure which language to do, though, and so I'm asking you guys for suggestions. If any of you are learning a language or want to learn a language (or are fluent in a non-English language), I'd be willing to learn with/from you about the language in question, and as I have no reason to learn a language aside from me finding it an interesting passtime I have no preferences as to which language I should learn.

I'd recommend German. It shouldn't be too hard, as it's similar-ish to English.

I second German because of how easy it would seem to be, though Italian may be a good one too as it's one of the basic Latin-originating languages that has very distinctive rules with few exceptions compared to most languages. It's not useful in terms of the number of people who speak it as their first language, but Italian would be a fantastic starting point that could help with learning things like Spanish (or vice versa if you feel like it).

"Try Neolithic icelandish."
That's not on Duolingo, nor is it an actual language.
German is one that I'm considering heavily, although if it's for the sole reason of it being easy, I read somewhere that Dutch is meant to be even better for that. For Italian, I've actually always wanted to go on a vacation to Italy, so it'd be quite useful to me anyway.

I suppose it's just a matter of weighing the pros and cons now. Ease of learning, usefulness, coolness... Latin is by far the coolest language (well - in my opinion) but of course it would be very difficult to learn. Not even Google has a complete Latin dictionary.

If I could learn any language, I'd choose Icelandic, but as that's not currently offered on Duolingo, I unfortunately can't choose that. At the moment I'm between Spanish, Dutch, German, French, Italian and Norwegian, in no particular order.

Are you limited to DuoLingo? Surely there must be some other online course - or even real-life classes! Though I have heard that if all else fails, the best way to learn a language is to read its newspapers. Order some of Iceland's papers from Amazon or whatever sells them and see what you can make of it. The words would stick in your head, as my grandfather once said.

I am largely limited to DuoLingo in terms of finding and using a site of reliable quality that falls within my very restrictive budget of "I don't have a job".

Lol! Well, that's understandable, of course. You seem smart, maybe you'll get a nice job after you finish education and that's when you can handle the languages you can't learn for free. For now... Do whatever you like, I suppose.

I came back just to say that you shouldn't study Irish as practically no one in the schools in Dublin wants to even study it and that only 15% of the country speak it on a daily basis, excluding Irish teachers.

Stick with Irish, help revive a dying language. I'm learning it as well and it's a pretty great language to learn. Voice translations are pretty awful, so if you're gonna stick with it I'd watch and listen to TG4 and RnaG online to get a feel for it. I can also toss you an Irish-language synthesizer for those tricky words.

Chinese. We'll all be speaking it soon enough, might as well start practicing Mandarin as early as you can.

Guys, Japanese isn't on Duolingo yet, nor do I think Tim would want to learn it.
Anyways, I also use Duolingo, I was learning Italian a while back until I realized the I should just learn Latin so I'd pretty much know Spanish, Italian, and French(I've been taking Spanish 1 since last year since I'm in middle school and they offer two years for one high school language credit before I get into highschool.) After my realization, I started German, but I haven't learned much yet.

3.5 months is one semester(generally one class, which is one credit), but I'm required two language credits to graduate.
