SAO could've been improved dramatically with one and probably controversial, change: have Kirito befriend Klein and make the two bond. Perhaps the two created Furrinkazan (Klein's guild) and overcame great adversity whilst doing so. Have the first couple episodes document Kirito and Klein's bonding, along with the creation of Furrinkazan. This would allow for deeper development of both Klein and Kirito in a dramatic and meaningful way. (Also have the two be the main protagonists, allow them to share the spotlight, rather than focusing exclusively on Kirito)
After the two have overcome such devastating odds by creating a respectable guild in an oppressing environment, have Kirito meet Asuna in a boss raid. Have the two bond...but goddammit flesh out the romance! Maybe Kirito begins to neglect Klein in favor of Asuna, have Klein become jealous and allow for a rift to form in the guild. Maybe due to the two founders becoming more distant morale is lowered, along with the guild's competence. After a few episodes of developing Kirito and Asuna's romance (rather than nausea-inducing time-skips) maybe the KoB and Furrinkazan decide to raid another boss. And in the ensuing fight most of Furrinkazan's attacking forces are depleted and Asuna is severely injured. (Maybe due to Klein's own mistake on the battlefield?)
After the fight Kirito and Klein have a discussion regarding the state of Furrinkazan. Kirito brings up the damage done to Asuna, and the massacre that befell their squadron. Angry with Furrinkazan and Klein's inability to safeguard Asuna, Kirito leaves Furrinkazan to go solo and spend time with Asuna. (He either goes solo or joins KoB, take your pick)
Now at the helm of Furrinkazan, Klein becomes more firm and surly. A few episodes can detail his inner struggle with the decline of Furrinkazan as a respected guild and his shattered friendship with Kirito, but he pulls through and brings Furrinkazan (almost) back to its former glory. He also tries to level up and train efficiently to ensure the safety of Furrinkazan and its members.
During Klein's own transformation, Kirito and Asuna continue their romance, but never get married. (Seriously, there should never have been a marriage option between two minors) Broken up about his deteriorated relationship with Klein, Kirito leans on Asuna for more psychological help and eventually joins KoB. Dedicate a few episodes to this. Now, at floor 75 a colossal raiding party is assembled, made up of KoB Furrinkazan and others. Klein and Kirito see each other but only exchange some words in passing. During the battle against the Skull Reaper Kirito notices something, Kayaba/Heathcliff had an "Immortal Object" prompt over his head just before his HP reached yellow.
After the battle Kirito confronts Heathcliff and the fight ensues, with Kayaba promising the players freedom if Kirito wins. Before fighting, Kirito gives a sorrowful goodbye to Asuna and apologizes to Klein for leaving Furrinkazan. (Of course the paralysis situation still happens)
Heathcliff/Kayaba and Kirito fight, but just like the original version Kirito uses "Starburst Stream." By using a Sword Skill Heathcliff/Kayaba is able to counterattack and kill Kirito with ease. Kayaba/Heathcliff teleports to the 100th floor and disables the paralysis as Asuna and Klein watch Kirito explode into polygons. Depressed, Asuna attempts suicide but realizes she cannot, since, just like the original, Kayaba/Heathcliff promised to ensure Asuna does not commit suicide.
Enraged, Klein loses sight of Furrinkazan and leaves the guild, instead going solo. He promises to avenge Kirito and care for Asuna. Eventually, Klein becomes max level. (100 I assume) And by this time floor 100 is to be cleared, freeing the players. A raid is designated on a certain date and Klein plans to attend. Hours before the raid Klein visits a mentally ravaged and grieving Asuna who has now become a recluse. Klein tells Asuna he is going to kill Heathcliff, to which Asuna smiles and wishes him good luck.
Now at the 100th floor an epiphany overcomes the raiding party: only one player may enter the Ruby Palace at a time. Being a solo player Klein volunteers to go first, regardless of Kayaba's immense strength. Klein enters the Ruby Palace and finds Kayaba sitting on a ruby throne, overlooking Aincrad through a nearby window. The two speak, with Klein promising to kill him. The fight begins, at first Klein is fighting a losing battle, since he is at a disadvantage with no Sword Skills, otherwise he could end up like Kirito. Kayaba brings Klein's health down to yellow and continues his violent assault on Klein.
Knowing death is a distinct possibility Klein strikes back, no holds barred and begins to overwhelm Kayaba. Kayaba's health is brought down to yellow and the two continue fighting. With Klein's new-found vigor, Klein is able to defeat Kayaba. Klein exits the Palace and is cheered for his bravery. Klein brings up the menu, says farewell to Aincrad and Kirito, and logs out. - |
