Equate the polynomials:
(x - 3)(ax^2 + bx + c) + r = x^3 + x^2 + x - 9 x(ax^2 + bx + c) - 3(ax^2 + bx + c) + r = x^3 + x^2 + 3x - 9 ax^3 + bx^2 + cx - 3ax^2 - 3bx - 3c + r = x^3 + x^2 + 3x - 9 ax^3 + (b - 3a)x^2 - (c - 3b)x - 3c + r = x^2 + x^2 + 3x - 9
Solve for a, b and c:
ax^3 = x^3 a = 1
b - 3a = x^2 b - 3(1) = x^2 b - 3 = 1 b = 1 + 3 b = 4
c - 3b = 3x c - 3(4) = 3 c - 12 = 3 c = 3 + 12 c = 15
r - 3c = -9 r - 3(15) = -9 r - 45 = -9 r = -9 + 45 r = 36
Answer: (x - 3)(x^2 + 4x + 15) + 36 = x^3 + x^2 + 3x - 9

what class are you
are lim's, Bolzano's theorem, function generators, continuation of functions in intervals and the theorems included in your class's maths |

Again, re-read what I said, I want confirmation for if this is right - my notepad can so talk to me and say "Hey man, you got it right".

@Apexian, okay so what you're doing is generalising C&G as a whole when some people here can actually probably do this. Good job, idiot.

what poly did is called the horner method [at least here]
it's one of the most usefull tools you will need ever in algebra and generally maths |

3 | a b c d 0 3a 3(b-3a) 3(c+3(b-3a)) a b+3a c+3(b-3a) d+3(c+3(b-3a))
always yields ax^(degree of numerator-1)+(b+3a)x^(degree of numerator-1) .. d+3(c+3(b-3a)) |

(assuming x=3 for the denominator, and also i meant (b+3a)x^(degree of numerator-2))
(in your case, denominator is x-3; but x=3) |
