I would like ROBLOX to support Linux. Linux is an os kernel which gains more popularity every day.

Why is Linux worthy?
- It gets more popular every day, as mentioned.
-- Some of ROBLOX users are switching to Linux.
- It has got a wide device support.

What will it do?
Positives:
- Linux users can switch from Linux-Windows/Mac dual boot into full Linux.
- ROBLOX can gain more popularity, which can mean more paying users, due to habit of donations(Mint gets >$5000 monthly out of them.).
– And richer community, of course.
- More games, more possible good ideas!
Negatives:
-Only 1000 or more want ROBLOX for Linux currently, which can mean waste of money(However, some time after release it will gain a lot of popularity, which can invert the negative result).

Another problem is, you can possibly not be able to support all distributions at once, how will it be done then? You can start from the most popular distributions(1. Mint 2. Ubuntu 3. Debian).
How can you make more popularity? The mentioned distributions have got their own software centres. You can add both Studio and Player into each centre and profit is coming!

Hey, you, reader, I am open to constructive criticism and suggestions for this! I will not flame you if you will not support for a valid reason(„Linux is bad because Windows is better because most popular!” = invalid → report, warning already.), I will take it into consideration.

Porting to another OS is always a good thing. Since they're bringing it to XBOX, and already ported to Mobile, they might as well add Linux to the mix.

sudo apt-get install roblox-player-launcher

sudo apt-get install roblox-studio

Shedletsky said they're 90% done with a Linux port, but there are three major things I think are stopping them:

EFFORT - An executable file works on Linux OR Windows, it can't work on both. That means they have to recode the game to work on Linux and then release that special version. That means they're gonna have to put in some effort. They get that effort with...

MONEY - They need to hire Linux developers. Salary is what makes up the cost of most big projects. A-List actors are sometimes paid seven-digit salaries for acting. When companies do this, they usually plan on getting a return for their effort. That may not be possible because of...

MARKET SHARE - A big thing when considering platforms is market share. Windows has the greatest market share of any operating system, which is why most developers focus on that first. Then they port it to Mac, since that's the second-biggest. Mac ports are something else entirely. Linux's market share is 1.74%, and of that 1.74% only a select few have even heard of ROBLOX.

I don't see it coming for a long time. Especially *because* of the recent Xbox port. They need time to cool down.

"Shedletsky said they're 90% done with a Linux port"

I do not think it is actual now.

"EFFORT - An executable file works on Linux OR Windows, it can't work on both. That means they have to recode the game to work on Linux and then release that special version. That means they're gonna have to put in some effort."

Of course, I except them to do it before 2020.

"MONEY - They need to hire Linux developers. Salary is what makes up the cost of most big projects. A-List actors are sometimes paid seven-digit salaries for acting. When companies do this, they usually plan on getting a return for their effort. That may not be possible because of..."

It is possible to get people who can work for free, or for not much.

"MARKET SHARE - A big thing when considering platforms is market share. Windows has the greatest market share of any operating system, which is why most developers focus on that first. Then they port it to Mac, since that's the second-biggest. Mac ports are something else entirely. Linux's market share is 1.74%, and of that 1.74% only a select few have even heard of ROBLOX."

Mac is 10% according to w3, Linux is 5%, as I mentioned, only 1000 or more want ROBLOX for Linux, but when ROBLOX comes out, it can be a huge profit after all.

"I don't see it coming for a long time. Especially *because* of the recent Xbox port. They need time to cool down."

I think it would come by 2020, latest 2025.
To be honest ROBLOX starts to make sponsors more often, it may be possible to do it before the stated time periods.

I am still going to count this as a No support, unless you change your mind.

It does need support for all computer OSes (atleast modern ones.)
They brought support to Xbox, which was very unneeded, but no support for Linux?
You need to do this, it will increase your playerbase.

@Burn That's the problem, I know more about system 32 than "Linux" whatever it is.

but debian is mint and ubuntu
just do debian, fedora, and zorin
but wait
roblox is too stupid to do this
roblox uses asp.net
they probably wouldn't be able to make the makefile for it

thats because you only use gaming software or some kind of trash like that
if you used computers for serious reasons, you would see linux supports a lot of them.
and yes linux on roblox is entirely possible

Most games don't support Linux because it's awful to debug since distros use their sound and graphics drivers differently, among other things.

most games dont support linux because devs are too damn used to winapi
linux is better because to compile you usually have to do "$ make linux" if there is a makefile and there almost always is
binaries are even easier
the only reason its "harder to debug" is because even though it returns the same errors, linux runs differently than windows (and a much more efficient way too)

It's harder to debug because different distros have different ways of doing things and different errors can appear. You need to account for Ubuntu, you need to account for Mint, you need to account for Fedora, you need to account for all of them.
