There are many benefits to allowing a kid on the web, but there are also some undesirable things that may come from it. How do you think you would raise a kid around it? Will you limit their access entirely? Watch them as they browse? Allow them to freely do what they wish (no adult sites, of course)? What would you do?
Personally, I would monitor my child whenever they are online, and help guide them to the good parts of the internet. At some point, I may allow more freedom, but only if I feel they understand the world well enough to deal with many situations that may occur online.

"lol not true for other people"
True, which is why I would monitor what they do until they appear to be mature enough
If I find my kid has been trolling, it could be treated just like bullying, depending on the severity of what they are doing. a harmless prank would be fine by me, but harassing a twitch streamer for example would be unacceptable.

| The world is a harsh place, you can't shelter kids forever without consequences. I would allow them to find their own path into the internet, but watch their internet history closely. |

@YungSmoke That's a pretty good way to do it. Would you get a keylogger aswell to make sure what your child has been saying is appropriate?

Well,it depends on their age. 6-10,I'd let them on animal jam, or disney. 10-12,Let them play things like terraria and things like that. 13-18 I'd let them do about anything :p

i'll let them exercise their independence on the internet, autonomy is an excellent trait and so is self-discipline; something a child can't learn while restricted by their parents.
they'll be less sensitive to gore and "mean words" and they're going to jack off anyway so might as well start early |

in all seriousness though I would barely limit the internet at all I wouldn't want to block away most of the magical interwebs and give them a bad impression of what technology is like
plus I know how it feels to be limited on the internet and only able to go on sites like Disney and Nick and its boring and the only time I had fun on my computer is when I decided to ignore the rules and go wherever I wanted.
I'd block obvious bad sites though |

@don I would agree there is a level of self-discipline on the internet, but sometimes it can go a little too far. For example, the punishment for giving personal information on the internet is constant harassment and possible identity theft. A bit too much punishment for a common mistake among children.
Again, I would monitor their actions closely and explain how the world works to them until I can be assured they are mature enough to react to new troubling situations on their own.
