Probably because it originates from some thousand year old origin and it's name evolved throughout the course of time.

In the early 1900's, Halloween was an unofficial holiday (like 4/20 would be today) for young men to cause chaos. In response, homeowners brought money, which is now candy, to 'bribe' the young men away.
Now it's just a day for kids to dress up and get candy. |
