Simply mentioning something from the bible is just not tolerated anymore. While the same people who tell those of truth to 'shut up' turn around and talk about how things need to be tolerated more.

Normally, those types aren't atheists- they're antitheists. They just have a loathing for anything pertaining to Christianity.

however I would think that the idea of an benevolent being would be welcomed in the community, as that would be a quick and easy answer behind most of our questions about reality?

I'm not against religion. I'm against people using religion to justify hatred, ignorance, and irrational paranoia. I do believe that religion and modern science/culture can coexist, but many refuse to let it be that way.

What makes me laugh is when you get atheists who claim to be independent and free from God... then waste their time constantly watching anti-theist videos, causing arguments over nothing and generally basing their life on denying God and insulting theists.

Hypocrites.

What irritates me is that poeple assume Christianity is 'anti-science', which is absurd. (Not to mention offensive.)

Some of the greatest scientific minds of the past were Christains.

What those poeple don't understand is there is nothing in the bible that teach 'science is evi/fake', in fact, it is believed he is an orderly and logical God.

On the contrary, science (the unbiased, concrete laws of the universe) was established by God. There's no reason for Christians to shy away from it; science is a testament to God's glory and artistry.

@Andrew I agree. In many cases, Christianity has aided science in many ways. The man who made up the Big Bang Theory was a Catholic in fact. Some of the greatest scientists and mathematicians throughout history have been Christian/religious.

People talk about how the Church persecuted scientists. This is simply not true, and most people cannot name one person who was legitimately persecuted for advancing science. In fact, Monks and Priests were responsible for translating old Greek, Roman, Egyptian and various other works on topics such as science, mathematics, medicine, philosophy and much more. Without them, the world would be considerably less advanced.

@Tailswokf That was what I was trying to say in the first place.

I t eds I didn't type it out well, when I was stating He us logical and orderly I meant he created science and such.

Whether or not the Bible is compatible with science depends on its interpretation. If you interpret it as an allegory, metaphor, or book of fables, then no problem! Science and God are the best of buds! If you interpret the Bible literally, then it isn't compatible at all.

gonna jump in here while people are being somewhat civil

i think a lot of people have a fairly negative perception of Christianity because of the small percentage of Christians who don't understand the Bible (and especially not the Old Testament) and use it as an excuse to justify their hatred of minorities.

there are passages that do condemn certain behaviors, but nowhere does it say you're supposed to hate someone for committing those sins (as everyone, even Christians, are sinners, and hating someone for their sin is absolutely hypocritical). God hates the sin, not the sinner.

and like other people in this thread have pointed out, Christians are not supposed to be 'anti-science'. i guess you could say there are some that are, but most would agree that science is very important for understanding the world around us. the only time i've ever seen Christians disagree with science is when it directly conflicts with something in the Bible, and even then, some still try to find ways to work those things in there anyway (look up 'theistic evolution' for an example).

But would that perception not reduce God to the level of merely a fictional character in a story, thereby contradicting what you said about the compatibility of science and God? Because, by that reasoning, God would not exist.

This is true. Hate the sin, not the person. Most people who use religion to justify their hate just treat Christianity as a feast, which they can pick and choose from. Some passages and verses they will gladly accept, whilst others they completely ignore.

And on the flip side, some Christians focus too much on the agape elements of Christians and ignore the elements talking about sin and Hell.

@Tai

No, but just from looking at the Bible and its stories, it's obvious that it is one big allegory or fable. Take, for example, the Garden of Eden and the loss of Paradise. It's obvious that it's an allegory for humanity' transition to agriculture and away from hunting and gathering. I mean, can anyone honestly believe that there actually was a talking snake who told a woman to eat some fruit, and THAT'S why death and sin exist?

Even so, there are people who believe the Bible to be an allegory, and still believe in God and Jesus and all that jazz. The Catholic Church comes to mind. And don't you DARE use the "No True Scotsman" fallacy to discredit this argument!
