In Language Arts, we have a project where we have to write a short story based on any video game of our choice. Naturally, I picked Fallout. This is what I came up with:
The Fallout (World War III)
At the time of the nuclear war, there was a major energy crisis around the world. We learned in social studies about all of the wars over oil fought decades ago, and the war that the United States is on the brink of. It was the year 2063. Oil and gas were extremely expensive because of the now few refineries around the world. America had teamed up with Exxon Mobil, the largest and one of the last American energy companies, to supply the highest class citizens with the little going around.
Only the rich had cars, with gas and motor oil starting at $7099 per gallon. Because of this, most of everybody lived in the cities, where everything was dense very close together, to avoid walking long distances.
There was extreme tension between the USA, Russia, and China. Russia, now stronger than ever, due to Vladimir Putin rebuilding the Soviet Union, had teamed up with China and combined their nuclear programs. Russia-China surpassed the US in economics, and America was crumbling from the lack of imports from China. With almost four-hundred million citizens, it was getting difficult to feed America.
I’m Seth. I live a pretty average American life in Boston, wondering if I’ll be able to survive ‘til the next day. We’ve been at an all-time low for food for the past few years, so my family was converted into a farming family. Thank God that we’ve had good conditions for growing crops, or else we would’ve been done for. It’s been extremely hot for autumn, reaching into the 90’s on average. It was almost always humid, so it rained a lot. Stargazing is now an old dream- in the cities, all of the light pollution and smoke added up, I guess. Also, the Arctic Circle is gone.
We were in homeroom, coloring something meaningless, when our teacher turned on the radio as usual, to the same old boring news channel. But recently, it wasn’t so boring. More fights had broken out between Russia-China and America. Russia-China was running out of food and energy as well, and blamed America. The nuclear programs were more active than ever, and nobody could say that they weren’t scared. Just the press of a button, or a computer malfunction, and the whole world blows each other up.
Talking about some terrorist group that’s held power for a few months now, I noticed a bit of panic in Reporter Troy’s voice. “Umm… We have some breaking news. Nuclear devices have been deployed in… oh God… Nuclear devices have been deployed in Eastern Pennsylvania. Report to the nearest Fallout Shelter immediately. I repeat, please report to the nearest Fallout Shelter immediately. I… I gotta get out of here.”
There were rapid footsteps, and then silence.
Half of the kids stared at the radio with blank expressions. The other half were freaking out, pounding on things, screaming, not knowing what to do.
I had gone through this drill before, as he lived in the pre-selected population that would fit into the nearest shelter. Quickly, without a word, he got up, and began running out the door.
I ran out of the school, avoiding the shouts from teachers, and ran across the near-empty street, some pedestrians still unaware of the news. The first thing I had to do was find my family, then I had to get to the shelter before nukes hit.
By now, other countries would have detected our missile, and they’d have sent more in the direction that the first came from. There were streaks across the sky, headed across the ocean. The source of those streaks had enough power to wipe out an entire part of a continent.
I reached my house well within three minutes to meet nobody. My mom and dad were at work, at the Nuka Cola factory. My baby brother was with my babysitter, who was supposed to be here. Perhaps they’d gone to the ice cream parlor? Who knows. I assumed that they’d be headed to the same place as well.
I hopped on my bike and began pedaling down Frankfort Street and onto Porter, heading to the Memorial Park. Right in the middle of the park, there was an enormous platform that was able to sink into the ground. That was my designated Fallout Shelter, Vault 111 as the vault-building company called it.
I hurried up to the platform. I wave of relief washed over me as I stopped on the smooth marble surface of the device that would lower me to my safety. The operators were there, too, ready to lower us. I was scanning the crowd, trying to find the rest of my family, when a loud commotion broke out.
Panicked faces looked up at the sky, staring at a long cylinder shaped object roaring across the sky like an airplane without wings. Smoke trailed behind it as it flew inland. A fleet of them accompanied the introducing missile.
“We have to go now!” the operator yelled. He began operating levers and buttons. The platform lurched downward as screams came from the crowd, pleas telling the operator that family members still had to come, that they were meeting somebody.
Seth began pushing through the crowd, searching frantically. He reached the edge of the crowd, his head at ground level. He watched his parents rushing from a block away.
But it was too late.
Tears began streaming out of Seth’s eyes as he was lowered into the ground, separated from his family. He stared up as the hatch began closing above the platform. In that last second that he would never forget, his parents reached the edge of the platform and looked down, horrified expressions on their faces. For a millisecond, right before the hatch closed, they made eye contact with Seth.
The Vault members were now in silence for a few minutes. While the platform lowered even further into the ground, people were silently sobbing over lost family members. Seth stood in shock as the ground shook, soil falling from the ceiling of the shaft. Over the next day, the ground continued to shake as America was bombarded with nukes. World War III had just begun, and I think it ended just as quickly. |

| @jimmysnow02 It doesn't have to be EXACTLY like the actual game lore. In my version, WW2 happened at the original time already, and everything that I write about the future is based off of current events (energy crisis wars, American-Russian tension, global warming, etc.) |
