It's almost scary with some of the resemblances that book has to modern society.
Like the scene where Goldstein is on the telescreen for the Two Minutes of Hate and everyone is yelling and screaming at it reminds me of the modern news articles that are solely written to stir up strong emotions in the reader (particularly anger).
And the 24/7 propaganda holds true for today.

If you think that's scary, read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
It rings much more true to today's society than 1984. |

@EX
It is on my list of books to read before I die.
Isn't it about a society where everyone is so ridiculously passive? Or is that another book?

despite being british, with 1984 orwell wrote, imo, a very very american book. america has this culture of fear that most other western nations do not. there is constant fear of a tyrannical government in the united states; one that will take away our guns and poison our air. on the other hand, the united kingdom has millions of public security cameras and the public at large has no qualms with this.
i understand the fear 1984 instills, but it is a rather ridiculous one |

"Isn't it about a society where everyone is so ridiculously passive? Or is that another book?" Yeah, that's it. A society hypnotized by pleasure rather than fear. |

@Pulp
You make a valid point.
I don't have fear that any second my rights are going out the window, but I do feel that the whole propaganda thing rings very true in today's world. America may not be a totalitarian society, but it definitely is a society that perpetuates a very large amount of propaganda.

You're bluffing. I highly doubt you could have completed all of those books in a single day.
I am also reading 20000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne and Crookedstar's Promise by Erin Hunter.

I read some worse alternate histories from online. I think the most grim and depressing one I read was What Madness Is This. Seriously read parts of the entire story the damn world is full coldblooded haters who hate anybody who not of their country and many other things.
