These are NATO standard codes, British Army has codes slightly changed but for the sake of comparison, it's standard stuff
OR-1 Private. OR-2 Americans have Private, British army just has private again OR-3 British Army has Lance Corporal, US Army has PFC OR-4 in the British Army is Corporal, equivalent to Specialist and Corporal in the US OR-5 is Sergeant, equivalent to both US Sergeant and US Staff Sergeant OR-6 is Sergeant again OR-7 is S/Sgt. British S/Sgts are senior to US Staff Sergeants, equivalent to SFC OR-8 is WO2, and an appointment of that, Company Sergeant Major, equivalent to 1SG or MSG. OR-9 is WO1, usually appointed Regimental Sergeant Major.
Officer ranks are all the same, apart from instead of General of the Army, the British Army has Field Marshall. The navy commander is not General of the Navy, but Admiral of the Fleet. The RAF have Marshall of the Air Force rather than General of the Air Force.
Just a note: The US military has 2nd LT and 1st LT. The British Army just has 2nd LT, and then it's just 'lieutenant' with no numbers attached.
Trivia: British Army pronounces it 'Leftenant' rather than 'Lootenant', which is the traditional French way to say it. |
